Chapter 59: The Butcher Arrives

“What are you doing here? Trying to make a joke of yourself like a hen crowing at dawn?”

Liu LuanLin’s icy words cut straight into Shi LiLi, leaving her stiff and speechless in embarrassment.

But Rahu’s face also changed slightly. He immediately realized the real target of the insult wasn’t Shi LiLi—it was him. Liu LuanLin must have overheard Rahu’s earlier mocking remark about the “hen crowing at dawn.”

Seeing his Second Madam get humiliated, Liu ZuoWu hurriedly straightened and saluted. “Good afternoon, Commander!”

“Commander!”

The other Verocious Wolf officers and soldiers instantly followed, snapping to salute. Only a few didn’t—Liew Ruyan and her family, of course, ordinary civilians weren’t trained for military etiquette, and Rahu, Xie YongQiang, Bai Yuhao, and the rest had no intention of saluting a man they despised.

Liu LuanLin hadn’t appeared until now, but this was his territory. He knew everything that happened here—every word, every movement.

He’d thought Chen Ning was a small fry who could be handled with a single guard. But then Leng JianFeng died.

And when Liu ZuoWu later captured Chen Ning, it should’ve been as easy as crushing an ant—yet suddenly Bai Yuhao, Liew Ruyan, and even Rahu were standing up for him.

Do these people not know Chen Ning is the man I personally ordered to be dealt with? Since when can every random mutt defy me in my own base?

That thought—more than anything—was what truly enraged him.

Liu LuanLin swept his cold gaze across the room until it locked on Rahu’s group. Slowly, he strode forward and stopped less than a meter from Rahu, meeting his eyes head-on.

In size, Liu LuanLin was shorter and stockier, while Rahu was tall and broad-shouldered. But the aura around the legion commander crushed him like a mountain. Rank alone could kill.

Years of power had taught Liu LuanLin the oldest rule of domination—cut off the head, the body falls.

Rahu was the strongest among Chen Ning’s supporters, and the loudest and held the highest authority. So Liu LuanLin had already decided: crush Rahu first, make him kneel, and the rest would fall in line.

In the Imperial Army, the rule was absolute: a lower rank must salute a superior, regardless of legions.

Liu LuanLin’s stance made his meaning plain—you’d better salute me.

Rahu hesitated. He might be Major General Xiao Feng’s confidant, but his own rank was still too low. Faced with the full pressure of a colonel, even he couldn’t resist. After a pause, he lifted his hand stiffly.

“Reporting to the Colonel.”

Liu LuanLin smirked. “Heh, Major Luo really does know his manners.”

With their leader forced to bow, Xie YongQiang, Bai Yuhao, and Su Luo had no choice but to follow.

Satisfied, Liu LuanLin gave a victor’s smile, even nodding briefly at Bai Yuhao. Then his gaze slid to Chen Ning, still shackled in the interrogation chair.

“Major Rahu, Young Master Bai,” he said with a smooth but cutting tone. “The Verocious Wolf Legion can handle its own affairs. You may leave now.”

Polite words—but the meaning was clear: get out.

Everyone glanced at Rahu. Even Liew Ruyan and Xie YongQiang waited for his cue.

But Rahu wasn’t one to retreat. Chen Ning had once saved his life, and leaving in disgrace before all these eyes wasn’t his style. Once word spread, every soldier in the base would be laughing at him.

He said calmly, “We’re all very concerned about the progress of the case involving Chen Ning. Since the Colonel says you can handle it, then handle it here and now.

Don’t tell me that a small matter like this will take your Verocious Wolf legion ten days or more to resolve? That would only make everyone doubt the Verocious Wolf legion’s competence.”

A faint tremor ran through the room. That was twice now Rahu had openly insulted the Verocious Wolf Legion.

When Liu Luanlin heard Rahu’s words, he felt a bit irritated. Even before he showed up, Rahu had already mocked the Verocious Wolf Legion as garbage. And now he was saying that if they didn’t deal with Chen Ning’s matter on the spot, it would make people doubt the Verocious Wolf Legion’s capability.

Liu LuanLin’s smile turned brittle. Without a word, he turned toward Liu ZuoWu. “The interrogation—how far has it gone?”

Liu ZuoWu froze for a heartbeat. He had two confessions in hand—one true, one false.

The true one, recorded with Liew Ruyan present, cleared Chen Ning completely, and should be released immediately.

The false one, which he’d forged, framed Chen Ning for colluding with the SSS-class fugitive Pang QingYun to murder Leng JianFeng.

Liu ZuoWu stole a glance at Liu LuanLin’s face. The commander’s eyes glinted with cold intent. That was all he needed to know. Liu LuanLin didn’t want Chen Ning walking out alive—not just for killing Liu Xi, but to make it crystal clear who ruled this base.

“Reporting, sir! At first Chen Ning refused to confess, but under the careful interrogation of myself and the Second Madam, he finally broke down and admitted working with the SSS-class criminal Pang QingYun to kill Major Leng JianFeng.

His confession is here. We were just about to have him sign and fingerprint it.”

He respectfully presented the forged statement.

Liu LuanLin glanced at it, then sneered. “So he confessed. Fine. Have him sign it, and carry out immediate execution by firing squad. No review required.”

“Yes, sir!”

Liu ZuoWu barked the order, motioning for two soldiers to grab Chen Ning.

Shi LiLi couldn’t suppress a delighted laugh—quickly covering her mouth, though the gleam in her eyes betrayed her glee. See? In front of my husband, all your barking means nothing.

But Bai Yuhao, Su Luo, Liew Ruyan, and Xie YongQiang all blanched in shock.

Rahu’s voice rang out, low and sharp. “Hold it.”

He stepped forward, his face dark. “Colonel Liu, this isn’t proper procedure, is it? There’s rules to it”

He was right. Chen Ning hadn’t voluntarily confessed, and as a reserve officer candidate, even if guilty, he should face judgement in military court—not an immediate execution.

But Liu LuanLin had long since lost patience. He still gave some respect to Major General Xiao Feng—but Rahu? In his eyes, the man wasn’t even worth spitting on.

“Rule?” Liu LuanLin barked a laugh. “In the Verocious Wolf Legion, my word is the rule. Men—have him sign it, then execute him!”

Rahu’s face hardened, but he could do nothing.

Liu ZuoWu sneered and grabbed Chen Ning’s limp hand, pressing it toward the paper— and right then, the interrogation room door burst open again.

Liu LuanLin’s fury erupted. “Who dares barge into my base without permission? Are you all tired of living?”

But when he saw who entered, his voice died in his throat. Surprise flickered across his face, and he blurted, “City Lord?”

At the door stood a refined-looking man in an elegant uniform—Yu WenYuan, the City Lord of Vermilion Phoenix City himself.

Behind him were two officers in the dark uniforms of the Phoenix Legion: the Butcher and Jian Qing.

Jian Qing’s eyes immediately found Chen Ning, broken and barely breathing. She rushed forward, seizing his shoulders. “Chen Ning! Are you all right?”

Chen Ning’s voice was weak but steady. “I’m fine, Instructor… they’re framing me.”

Jian Qing’s gaze flicked to Liu ZuoWu—and to the fake confession still clutched in his hand. Her eyes went razor-sharp. Without warning, she lashed out with a lightning-fast kick.

Liu ZuoWu never saw it coming. Though his rank matched hers, his strength did not.

The kick sent him flying, crashing to the floor with a scream—one of his ribs audibly snapping.

The entire room went still. Then Liu LuanLin’s face turned purple with rage.

“Who are you? A mere major daring to act wild in front of me?!”

At that moment, a burly man with a cigar strolled forward, his voice lazy and amused.

“She’s my subordinate. Sorry—every one of us from the Phoenix Legion is this arrogant.”
