Chapter 19: Why Sword Sect Disciples Remain Single
This wasn’t what the three senior brothers had imagined.
In their minds, Song Zhen and the others should have fought with everything they had, displaying the elegance, poise, and dignity of the Mystic Cloud Sword Sect to the fullest. Even if they had lost, their style and composure should have been flawless.
But the reality was completely the opposite. They had won—but their sense of decorum? Nonexistent. Worse, the villain was pointing at them and calling them shameless!
It was the first time anyone had accused them of being vulgar. If the elders found out, they couldn’t even imagine the consequences.
Finally, just as arguments threatened to erupt into blows, Senior Brother Li shouted, silencing everyone.
“Quiet!”
“Since the mission is complete, it’s time to return. Don’t mention today’s events to anyone. If the elders ask, don’t answer—let us handle it.”
No way could the elders be allowed to find out.
Song Zhen didn’t understand. Why couldn’t they answer?
This was their first mission, and by all accounts, they had done brilliantly! They were unscathed, had subdued a ghost far more powerful than themselves, and had even independently broken a formation. Surely all that counted as an impressive accomplishment—so why not tell the elders?
“Senior Brother, shouldn’t we say our mission went well? Why can’t we answer when the elders ask?” Song Zhen asked.
Li forced a wry smile. “Do you want everyone to know you won by… urinating on the ghost? You shameless lot. The three of us still have some dignity left—please, leave us a shred of face.”
They had lived a long time, but had never seen anything this outrageous.
There were countless ways to break a formation and subdue a ghost, so why choose the most embarrassing one?
The worst part: they hadn’t even silenced the ghost. They even let her run around yelling their shameful acts for all to hear. Where was their pride?
Everyone else lowered their heads silently. This wasn’t exactly something you advertised.
Even though they had won impressively, it was hardly “gentlemanly.” Still, if a similar situation arose next time, they’d probably use the same method. Quick, effective, and simple—why overthink it in a crisis?
To prevent the ghost from spreading tales, Senior Brother Chen had already placed a silencing spell on her.
They could have easily destroyed her right then. The female ghost radiated an especially heavy aura of blood and misfortune—there were surely many lives on her hands.
Even if they reduced her to nothing but a wandering soul, it would have been deserved. But since this was the first mission that Song Zhen and the others had completed entirely on their own, they still needed to bring this captive back for the elders to see.
On the way back, everyone was unusually silent.
Suddenly, Song Zhen exclaimed:
“Oh! I get it!”
Everyone looked at her, puzzled. Get what? What can you get on the way back, of all times?
Song Zhen, her face full of excitement, turned to Senior Brother Bi.
“Senior Brother Bi, I know why there are so many single people in our Sword Sect!”
Senior Brother Bi scratched his head, completely confused. Why are we suddenly talking about the sect’s shortage of couples?
Song Zhen continued, even more animated:
“You’ve all probably encountered ghosts and spirits during missions, right? Generally, the thing ghosts fear most is an object of utmost yang. A pure boy’s urine counts as one such object.
“Even if you’re not a child, as long as your First Yang Energy hasn’t been expended, they are still considered pure. You know, you use it as a powerful weapon in dangerous situations!”
The more she talked, the more excited she became, her eyes shining brighter and brighter.
The others were on the verge of losing their minds listening to her.
Senior Brother Bi tried to cover her mouth, but she was too fast. After a frantic attempt, he hadn’t even touched her sleeve.
Senior Brother Li and Senior Brother Chen kept utterly blank expressions. They looked alive, but in truth, they had already died inside quite some time ago.
They themselves had never realized that the reason they were all singlel… was actually because of this.
If Song Zhen was right, they had sacrificed far too much in the fight against demons and spirits.
Song Zhen’s explanation was strange, yes, but it actually made a certain amount of sense.
The other disciples believed it immediately. If it wasn’t because of this, then why did the Mystic Cloud Sect have so few people with cultivate partners?
The sect master, several elders, and the vast majority of the disciples were all single. They were excellent people! They were powerful! It wasn’t possible that not a single woman found them appealing.
There were a few senior brothers and sisters who had cultivate partners, but they were definitely the minority.
Seeing the doubtful looks on everyone’s faces, Senior Brother Chen couldn’t hold back anymore.
“You actually believed that?! She’s talking complete nonsense! Can’t you all use your brains a little?”
“The reason our Sword Sect has so many bachelors isn’t because of that. We simply prioritize cultivation above all else. And it’s not like no one in our sect has a partner.”
“You really believed the nonsense this girl spouted?”
Although Senior Brother Chen tried his very best to explain and dispel the rumors, the results… were not great.
Song Zhen kept the same expression the entire time—go on, explain; I’ll just quietly watch you.
The restrained female ghost was practically laughing herself mad on the inside.
She knew she wouldn’t survive this; most likely she would soon be blasted into nothingness, her soul scattered to ash. But to uncover such a hilarious secret right before dying—well, that wasn’t a bad way to go.
And if by some miracle even the tiniest shred of her soul managed to remain… she would definitely spread this story to the world.
Back at the Mystic Cloud Sect, the elders were already waiting.
Seeing the juniors return, full of energy, a few elders thought they were hallucinating. Especially when they saw the captured ghost—they couldn’t believe it.
They had actually brought back the ghost unharmed, despite her higher cultivation. Were other senior brothers secretly intervening?
Seeing the elders’ questioning looks, Senior Brother Bi and the others shook their heads. No intervention had occurred.
“Elders, the juniors performed exceptionally. We had no hand in it,” Senior Brother Bi assured.
Song Zhen and the others were already brimming with pride—they were simply that outstanding!
Meanwhile, Senior Brother Li and Senior Brother Chen were tense, dreading detailed questions. The truth couldn’t be revealed, and they hadn’t fabricated a story yet.
Fortunately, the elders didn’t press on how the ghost had been subdued.
The ghost was retained for purification. Her aura was thick with bloodlust and malevolence; she needed to be properly exorcised.
