Chapter 22: Which Scoundrel Dug This Giant Pit?
Song Zhen squinted her eyes, grinning mischievously.
“Elder, I’ve thought of a way that might eliminate some people.”
Eliminate some people? What kind of plan was that?
A day later, as Elder Rong looked at the enormous pit the disciples had proudly dug out, his old face was on the verge of completely collapsing.
Song Zhen even said to her senior and junior brothers with great pride, “As long as they fall into this pit, we’ve already won half the battle. And if it delays them long enough, we can directly get them eliminated!”
The disciples cheered: “Great!”
After losing every tournament before, everyone had been quietly holding in their frustration.
The method was a bit underhanded, sure, but what if it actually worked? Besides, there were no rules saying they couldn’t use such a dirty trick.
Every time they lost, wasn’t it because the other side used every trick and tactic imaginable? It’s not like one crook gets to laugh at another.
Some of the senior brothers even brought out treasured artifacts they were normally reluctant to use. Ideally, once those people fell in, they would trap them with these items—the longer they were trapped, the better.
Watching the disciples’ excited faces, Elder Rong wanted to vanish.
Where were all the righteous disciples of the Mystic Cloud Sword Sect? Had they been replaced by imposters?
This was his first time leading a team—why did chaos have to strike under his watch, and in such an embarrassing way? If word got out, how many people would laugh at him?
Blushing with shame, Elder Rong pulled Song Zhen aside.
“Song Zhen, is this the plan you’re talking about? Isn’t this a bit… too underhanded?”
Song Zhen shook her head and replied seriously:
“How can this be called underhanded? It’s called ‘all’s fair in war. And if they fall into this pit, it’s because they weren’t careful. How is that our fault?”
“Besides, we’re just digging a pit this time. It’s a lesson for them. What if, during future trials, they get tricked by someone else? This counts as experience gained indirectly.”
She nodded confidently. Exactly—experience gained!
“Most importantly, who can prove we dug this pit? Who saw it? Even if someone saw, it doesn’t prove anything. There’s no rule against digging a pit. We were just bored, so we dug one for fun. What’s wrong with that?”
Song Zhen spoke with absolute conviction. Watching her remain completely unbothered, Elder Rong didn’t know what to say.
Why are there people in this world with such thick faces? And the crazy part is, this shameless person is even a disciple of their Sword Sect!
The little girl looked clever and upright, but she really was full of tricks. No wonder the sect master came over every day to complain—he couldn’t win an argument with her, nor could he scold her properly. Now it was clear: the sect master’s losses weren’t undeserved.
Some senior disciples still thought the plan was a bit immoral, but seeing everyone else so excited, they didn’t have the heart to stop them. So they decided to look the other way, pretending they saw nothing.
After setting the trap, everyone left happily.
It was now a waiting game to see which unlucky soul would fall in. If they could trap someone, great. If not, it didn’t matter—they had nothing to lose.
Sure enough, the next unlucky victim appeared not long after.
“Ahhhhh! Which scoundrel dug such a huge pit here—and even cast an illusion spell over it?!”
The disciples of the Magic Sect all tumbled down as soon as they set foot on the ground, leaving only their leading elder unscathed—after all, experience beats youth.
Watching the disciples grimacing and writhing in the pit, the elder couldn’t stop cursing in anger.
“Elder, there’s even a formation set up in here. We won’t be able to get out anytime soon.”
It had to be said—the senior brothers and sisters had really gone all out, even using the formations they usually kept in reserve. These formations were normally used against demons and evil spirits, and were quite difficult to break. This was the first time they had ever been used against fellow cultivators.
The result was clear, it worked extremely well, as the trapped disciples cursed while trying to break free.
“Which sect is so brain-dead as to pull these petty tricks? Was the first one to arrive here the Sound Sect? They’re always full of little schemes, but this time… this is really going too far!”
It took them half a day to climb out of the pit. Since the elders couldn’t interfere, they could only watch from the sidelines.
After getting out, they were still furious. They covered up the trap again and even set up a few more formations.
“We can’t be the only ones having bad luck! If we’re this unlucky, there’s no way we’ll let anyone else get off so easily!”
The trap sparked suspicion and tension between the sects. The underlying message was clear: “If we can’t have it easy, neither can you.”
Despite the suspicion, no one suspected the Mystic Cloud Sect.
After all, Sword Sect disciples were known for being honest and upright, too straightforward to pull such tricks. Their reputation was flawless—this time, no one doubted them.
“Elder Rong, did any of you step into that trap? I really don’t know which scoundrel dug such a huge pit and even set up a formation on top of it—it’s just too much!”
“Exactly, exactly! We were this close to wasting precious time. If we had, I wouldn’t even know how to explain it when we got back.”
“Hey, if you all stepped into the trap, then why did we step into it too? We came last!”
“Hahaha, you can’t play favorites here. It’s only fair if everyone goes through the same thing.”
Hearing the other elders speak, Elder Rong smiled and quietly wiped the sweat off his forehead.
Holy moly, you really can’t do anything shady—he was about to combust from stress.”
Luckily, no one suspected them, and honestly, watching them have such bad luck was kind of amusing.
Elder Rong forced a smile and joined in cursing the unknown trap-digger.
After all, he hadn’t dug it himself—at most, he had tolerated the disciples. The trap was Song Zhen’s idea.
And Song Zhen and her team were absolutely delighted—especially hearing other sects complain about the trap.
It made them even happier.
