Chapter 7: Grinding by Trapping Zombies
“I have to say, girls really live more delicately than boys. Many small items are quite useful for surviving the apocalypse.” However, what left Jiang Yi not knowing whether to laugh or cry was why so many girls’ dorm rooms hid so many ‘love-making raincoats’…
Having never used them before, Jiang Yi silently complained a bit but still stuffed them into his backpack without hesitation !
In room 609, Jiang Yi was already familiar with the routine. As long as he didn’t make noise, even if there were zombies inside, they shouldn’t detect him. He had just leaned his head close to the door, before he had time to listen carefully, when suddenly **CRASH!** the glass pane in the door, less than ten centimeters from his face, shattered from the inside out!
A putrid hand shot out like lightning, clawing toward Jiang Yi’s head…
Terrified, Jiang Yi instinctively recoiled, raising his left arm to block!
“Sskkrt!” A dull, grinding pain made Jiang Yi gasp sharply! He barely dodged the hand aiming for his neck, but his arm was still grazed by the sharp, blackened nails, drawing a line of blood!
“GROAN!” Crimson blood welled from his arm once more. The zombie, smelling fresh blood, went into a frenzy. The narrow strip of glass in the door was completely smashed as two rotting arms frantically thrust through!
Jiang Yi had no time to tend to his wound. Gripping the blade in his left hand, the cord quickly wrapped around his arm, stopping only at his elbow, looking almost like an armguard. With a furious roar, he swung the blade, cleanly severing the thinner of the two arms!
The noise of combat disturbed the entire sixth floor. Zombies in nearby rooms began roaring madly, pounding against their doors! Jiang Yi’s eyes reddened, ignoring everything else, he swung again, finally chopping off both arms!
Immediately after, a bluish face squeezed through the broken glass, but the gap was too small. Even as the head frantically slammed against the opening, it could only bite wildly at the air, separated by the door.
Jiang Yi sneered, thrusting his blade forward in a flash, piercing straight through the zombie’s mouth! Impaled on the sword, the zombie didn’t die immediately, still struggling madly. Jiang Yi held the blade firm, mustering all his strength to twist and tear, brutally ripping open half the zombie’s skull.
A surge of strength rose within him again, the earlier weakness completely gone. Watching the white light flow into his chest, Jiang Yi knew he had leveled up once more. As the zombie behind the door collapsed, another one replaced it at the opening. Without a moment to check his status, Jiang Yi slashed through the gap, the black blade cleaving through the second zombie’s forehead, from the crown down to between its eyebrows, before stopping.
The frantically struggling zombie dropped dead. Another flash of white light. Peering through the broken door pane to confirm no more zombies were inside, Jiang Yi pushed the two corpses jammed in the doorway aside and entered the room!
He stared strangely at the male zombie that shouldn’t have been in a girls’ dorm. Both zombies were completely naked, piled together in front of the door, their stench making Jiang Yi cover his nose.
Ignoring the zombie roars echoing from the hallway, Jiang Yi quickly searched the dorm. The results delighted him: inside a metal locker hung several men’s clothes, neatly arranged!
His own clothes hadn’t been changed in over ten days. They were not only torn in multiple places from zombie attacks but also stiff and darkened from his own and the zombies’ dried blood. Jiang Yi didn’t stand on ceremony, tearing off his cheap market-bought T-shirt and preparing to change into the obviously higher-end brand-name tracksuit from the locker.
But noticing the three wounds on his left arm still oozing blood, he paused. Fortunately, he’d found a small first-aid kit earlier. He used two bottles of water to carefully wash off the bloodstains, then sprayed hemostatic wound medicine from the kit onto the injuries.
A needle-like pain made him suck in a sharp breath, breaking out in a cold sweat from the agony. But he managed a basic treatment of the wounds.
Jiang Yi wasn’t afraid of being infected and turning into a zombie again. Back in the cafeteria, people got injured by zombies daily, but aside from ordinary survivors, none of the ability users ever turned after being wounded!
Only once, among the seven ability users injured by that evolved zombie, three initially survived but turned into zombies hours later.
That’s when everyone realized ordinary zombie virus no longer threatened ability users, but evolved zombies could still infect them.
Some top students speculated that only if ability users themselves advanced further could they resist this level of viral infection.
Throughout his life, Jiang Yi might have been poor at sports, but he was naturally meticulous and highly observant of his surroundings. He could immediately assess the level and strength of every zombie he killed.
It was precisely this trait that allowed him, with strength inferior to even an ordinary person’s, to survive for a full week.
Finding no bandages in the kit, Jiang Yi simply tore a strip from a clean bedsheet and wrapped it around his arm. Then he pulled on the newly found tracksuit. It was slightly too big.
But it had to be admitted, brand-name sportswear fabric was soft and allowed completely unrestricted movement, no matter how he moved.
He jumped in place a few times. Luckily, the male zombie’s shoe size was only one size larger than his, so they fit reasonably well.
Refreshed and after successfully killing two zombies, Jiang Yi’s courage grew. Moreover, after leveling up, he clearly felt his speed now far exceeded his previous self.
A glance at his attributes confirmed he was now Level 3! And the experience required for the next level had changed to 1/8.
Clenching his fist tightly, Jiang Yi knew his strength increased dramatically with each level. What he needed now was to continuously kill zombies for experience!
Thinking this, he wasted no more time. Emboldened, and since the doors prevented zombies from breaking out, he decided to stick with the previous method instead of testing each room individually!
Returning to room 619, Skull-Severing Blade in his left hand, scabbard in his right, he smashed the door’s glass pane with the scabbard! The zombie inside instantly lunged, its arms getting deeply cut by the broken glass without reaction, frantically clawing outward!
The black blade came down from above, smashing into its head. Jiang Yi gained another experience point in a flash! Such a convenient “farming” method filled Jiang Yi with secret delight. Everything became simple after that. The entire sixth floor became Jiang Yi’s personal leveling ground. One, two! By the time he finished looting the last room, 601, it was completely dark!
However, the harvest from the whole floor fell far short of Jiang Yi’s expectations. Having barely leveled up once more, Jiang Yi glanced at his attribute panel and sighed helplessly.
At the beginning of the apocalypse, panic from the disease caused many students to leave the university, so there were only a dozen or so zombies on the entire sixth floor. After ten days, most zombies that could leave their rooms to hunt for food had already done so. Though dissatisfied with his gains, Jiang Yi decided to call it a day. Checking his watch, it was almost 8 PM!
The powerless building corridor was pitch black. Going downstairs to find zombies now would be suicidal. Picking a clean dorm room without corpses, Jiang Yi turned on a small desk lamp and began sorting his loot!
He found many small items, mostly powerbanks and small utilities. In total, he had less than ten bottles of water, and not much edible food! All these items only half-filled his backpack when packed!
But Jiang Yi wasn’t worried. This was just one floor, five more awaited his exploration below! Moreover, killing zombies in the dorm rooms was incredibly safe. Not turning all the zombies here into his experience felt almost like a waste of his effort.
However, Jiang Yi didn’t let it go to his head. He clearly felt that after just a few fights, his body was already operating under strain. Lifting the blade felt heavier, and his mind was somewhat dazed. If not for his significantly increased speed and a last-moment of clarity during the final zombie encounter, it might have gouged his eyes out!
Furthermore, the wounds on his left arm had started bleeding again from the intense activity, clearly not having scabbed over much during the afternoon.
Lying on the bed, Jiang Yi knew these issues were because his Strength, Spirit, and Constitution were still too low. He couldn’t help regretting his earlier attribute allocation. If he had focused on Strength and Constitution, he might not be in such a sorry state now.
“Damn those past gaming experiences,” he muttered with a bitter smile. Exhausted, Jiang Yi fell into a deep sleep, tinged with threads of regret.
The night at the University was far from peaceful. Zombies that hid during the day emerged, driven by hunger. The scent of fresh blood anywhere would draw them to gather there!
Stronger zombies actively sought out prey to attack, while weaker ones could subsist on the corpses of zombies killed during the day. This was why the bodies of those slain during the day were almost always dragged away and disappeared by the next morning.
But this had little to do with Jiang Yi! The entire sixth floor was arguably the safest place in the whole university!
Ordinary zombies couldn’t climb stairs well, and the zombie stench masked the scent of Jiang Yi, a living person. So Jiang Yi knew tonight would be the most secure sleep he’d had in these ten days!
The day’s life-and-death terror, excitement, and fighting had utterly drained him. He slept like a log, completely unaware that the previously stationary doorknob was slowly, almost imperceptibly, turning… until the wooden door swung open without a sound.
