Chapter 3 – Sweets from Another World

“I’m home!”

“Oh, you’re back? Welcome home.”

“How did it go? Did you manage to pick any fruit?”

It seemed Mom and Dad were in the kitchen, but they poked their heads out from the counter. Marie climbed up onto a stool at the dining hall’s counter, opened the hemp sack, and showed them what was inside.

“Mom, Dad, look! We picked this much!”

“Oh my, aren’t those raspberries! You really got a lot. That’s amazing, Marie.”

“You’re right. With this many, we can all eat our fill. Should we have them after dinner tonight?”

“Yeah! I can’t wait!”

Marie was transferring the raspberries into a large wooden bowl Dad had brought out. She had a huge smile on her face and looked overjoyed. She must really love raspberries. I, on the other hand, would prefer them a bit sweeter. If we had sugar, I could make jam… Maybe I should ask Mom about sugar.

“Mom, do we have any sweet seasonings?”

“Sweet seasonings? Why do you ask?”

“Um… I was just thinking that if we had something sweet, the raspberries would taste even better.”

That doesn’t sound unnatural, does it? Please let there be sugar!

“Let’s see. We have honey or sugar, I suppose.”

“What? You have sugar?!”

“Leon, you know about sugar?”

“N-No, I just… happened to hear about it. That there’s a sweet seasoning called sugar.”

“I see. But they don’t sell sugar or honey around here.”

“What?! Why not?”

“Commoners aren’t wealthy enough to spend money on sweets, so sugar and honey just don’t sell. Besides, they’re more expensive than other seasonings.”

No… Even though it exists, we can’t buy it. But still, sugar does exist. It’s not like it’s absent from this world. In that case, the only question is how to get my hands on it!

“So, where do they sell it?”

“I think they sell it in the central district of the royal capital.”

“The central district of the capital?”

“That’s right. This is the western edge of the capital. The central district is where the king and all the nobles live. It’s full of high-end shops, so I’m sure they sell it there.”

So there really is a king and nobles. Does this mean only nobles get to eat sweet things?

“So, if I go there, can I buy some?”

“Probably not. I hear many of the shops in the central district only allow nobles and their associates inside. And even if you could get in, it would be too expensive for people like us to afford.”

“Oh… I see.”

“Besides, the central district is far from here. It takes over two hours by carriage.”

“Right… Well, I’ll give up on it then.”

“That’s probably for the best. …You’re eight years old now, Leon, so I’ll tell you this: you’d be in serious trouble if you caught the eye of a noble. I don’t think they ever come around here, so it should be fine, but you must never be rude to them. There might be some good nobles out there, but there are also unreasonable ones.”

Nobles sound terrifying… I want to stay as far away from them as possible. But to think that’s where the sugar is! It looks like I’d better find somewhere else that sells it.

“Thanks, Mom. I’ll give up on the sweet seasoning. The raspberries are delicious just as they are.”

I said that with a bright smile to reassure her. Mom had been looking rather grim just a moment ago.

At that, Mom’s expression softened, and she said.

“Well then, let’s all have some raspberries after dinner.”

“Okay!”

However, just eating those raspberries as they are is going to be tough. Isn’t there some way to make them delicious without sugar…?

What would be good? Maybe pouring them over French toast, or mixing them into pancakes… Mixing them into pancakes might actually be pretty good. With that idea, I immediately ran to ask Mom if I could use the kitchen.

“Mom! I thought of a dish using the raspberries. Can I use the kitchen?”

“I don’t mind, but… did you really think of it? You’ve never cooked before…”

Was it unnatural to come up with a recipe when I’ve never cooked? But I absolutely have to try this! Those things are way too sour.

“It’s from watching you and Dad cook all the time.”

I said that while gazing up at Mom with an innocent look. She chuckled and patted my head.

“Well then, I suppose I’ll let you make it.”

“Leon’s going to cook? I’m looking forward to this.”

Dad also agreed with a smile. I’ve really got to do my best now!

“Alright, I’ll clear a space for you to cook, so first, go put your things away and wash your hands.”

“Okay!”

“Marie, you go with Leon and put your things away, too.”

“Okay! Is big brother going to cook? I’m so excited!”

Marie is looking forward to it so innocently. The pressure is on… I really hope it turns out delicious.

I went with Marie to the storage room on the second floor and put away the gear we used for the forest. As I set down the basket I’d been carrying, I realized I’d forgotten about the firewood. It should probably go to the kitchen, so I’ll have to take it back downstairs.

“Marie, we forgot the firewood. Let’s take it downstairs.”

“Yeah! We have to get our allowance!”

It seems Marie’s attention had shifted from the raspberries to her allowance. She was already wondering what to buy with it.

“Alright, let’s go down.”

Marie and I carried the basket, still full of firewood, back downstairs. Mom was just coming out of the kitchen.

“Mom, we gathered firewood, too.”

“Oh, you did? Thank you. Could you go put it in the firewood box in the kitchen?”

“Okay!”

Marie and I replied cheerfully in unison and went into the kitchen, stacking the branches in the firewood box in the corner.

“You brought back firewood, too? Thank you.”

“Uh-huh! I gathered a whole bunch!”

“What a good girl, Marie.”

Dad gently stroked a proud-looking Marie’s head.

“Well, I’m gonna go put the basket away and wash my hands.”

“Me too!”

We went back upstairs to drop off the basket and then entered the living room on our way to the courtyard. Mom was waiting for us there.

“Here’s your allowance for bringing back the firewood.”

“Yay! Thank you!”

“Thanks, Mom.”

“You’re welcome. Go buy yourselves something at the food stalls.”

“Okay!”

Marie and I held our allowances tightly so we wouldn’t lose them and put them inside our own wooden boxes. There were four small wooden boxes in the living room, each for us to keep our important things in.

After stowing away our money, Marie and I went to the courtyard, drew water from the well, and washed our hands.

It seemed Marie was going to rest in the living room for a bit. I, on the other hand, had pancakes to make. Time to do my best and make some delicious pancakes!

“Alright, I’m heading to the kitchen.”

“Okay! Make something yummy, big brother!”

“Got it. I’ll do my best.”

With that, I headed for the kitchen.

When I got to the kitchen, Dad was still prepping the dinner menu, but Mom was waiting with the raspberries, having cleared a space for me.

“Thanks, Mom.”

“It’s no problem. I’m curious to see what you’ll make.”

“Dad’s really looking forward to it, too.”

“Don’t get your hopes up too high, okay? I don’t know if it’ll be any good.”

It’s kind of hard to deal with all this expectation. We don’t have sugar, and my memory of the recipe is vague, so I have no idea if it’ll turn out well… Ugh, their expectant looks are intense. I’ll just have to try my best.

“Well, let’s begin. What else do you need besides the raspberries?”

Um, if I remember right, pancakes are made with flour, eggs, milk, and sugar. I think… Man, in hindsight, I really should have learned to cook more. Wait… do they even have milk? With no refrigerators, milk seems unlikely.

“Mom, do we have any milk?”

“We don’t have any milk here. It doesn’t keep, and while we sometimes have it in winter, we don’t right now.”

Yeah, that’s what I thought. If there’s no milk, I guess I have to use water. I’m pretty sure there are pancake recipes that use flour, water, and eggs. The problem is, those taste good because you make them sweet with sugar. Since there’s no sugar, it’ll be a concoction of flour, water, eggs, and raspberry flavoring… Is that even going to be tasty?

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

“Mom, I need flour, eggs, and water. Do we have those?”

“We do.”

Mom quickly gathered the ingredients for me.

“Here’s everything. What do you do with it?”

“Um, you mix it all together in a bowl.”

“I see, it’s similar to bread. Are you making bread?”

“It’s similar to bread, but it’s different.”

I said that as I mixed the egg and water in the bowl, then started adding the flour. I seem to recall it being pretty thick and gooey, so… maybe about this much?

As I was mixing with that rough-and-ready approach, Mom stopped me, her face pale.

“Leon! Wait. You’ve added so much water, it’s all runny!”

“Huh? But this is how this dish is supposed to be.”

“But… won’t it be a waste?”

“It’ll be fine. Are there no other recipes like this?”

“No. When we make bread, we only use a little water so it firms up, and we don’t add eggs. We really only use flour to make bread, and eggs are just boiled or fried.”

In that case, no wonder the food in this world is so undeveloped. I’ll have to gradually make the dishes I remember.

“But my recipe is supposed to be like this.”

Even after I said that, Mom still looked anxious. Well, Leon’s never cooked before, so it’s only natural she’d be worried. I was wondering what to do when Dad came to my rescue.

“Roana, Leon is motivated to do this, so why not let him try? He can just make a small amount so it doesn’t go to waste.”

“You’re right. Just a little at a time, Leon.”

“Okay. Thanks!”

Thanks, Dad! I’ll definitely repay you for this later. There’s not much I can do, but I’ll find a way!

“Alright, this looks about right.”

All that’s left is to add the raspberries. I looked up to grab them, only to meet the stunned gazes of Mom and Dad.

“Leon…? Don’t tell me… that’s the finished product? You’re going to… eat that?”

Dad asked me hesitantly.

“No! This is still in progress. I’m going to add the raspberries and cook it now.”

“Oh, I see. Well, if it’s not finished, I suppose it’s fine if it doesn’t look appetizing yet.” Mom said.

You don’t have to look at it like it’s some kind of unidentifiable sludge! Well, I admit it looks pretty unappetizing as-is. I’d better hurry up and finish this.

I rinsed the bowl I’d used to beat the egg, put the raspberries in it, and started mashing them with a wooden spatula. I could just add them whole, but I figured mashing them would infuse the flavor better. At this point, even I have no idea how this will taste. I just hope it’s good.

After mashing a decent amount of raspberries, I added them to the batter I’d mixed earlier. Then I mixed it all together again. After mixing, I threw in a few whole raspberries too. A bit of texture from the fruit should make it tastier.

“Okay, it’s ready! All that’s left is to cook it. Can I use a frying pan?”

“Yes, of course. Use this one. I’ll light the fire, so just wait a moment.”

With those words, Mom held her hand over the firewood in the hearth and whispered, “Ignite.” Just like that, the wood, which hadn’t even been smoldering, burst into flames.

I was so shocked I was speechless, but also thrilled. This is magic. Leon’s memories had it, but this was the first time I’d seen it in person. Amazing! So cool! This is another world! Inside, my excitement was at max level.

According to Leon’s memories, both Mom and Dad have a fire affinity, but their mana is low, so they can only use it a few times a day. I want to use magic soon, too. I can’t wait to go to the church to have my mana measured!

I was so lost in thought, staring at the hearth, that Mom had to call out to me.

“Leon? What’s wrong, spacing out like that? Don’t you need to cook that?”

Her words snapped me out of my magic-fueled daydreams. Right, I was in the middle of making pancakes.

“Sorry, Mom. I was just thinking how cool magic is.”

“You’re eight now, Leon, so you’ll be able to use it soon, too. We’ll have to go to the church one of these days.”

“Yeah! I’m so excited!”

As I beamed with a huge smile, Mom gave a wry laugh and said.

“Right now, you need to focus on finishing your cooking, not on magic.”

“Okay!”

I reined in my excitement about magic and decided to concentrate on the food.

This kitchen has a standing-height hearth, so they got me a stool. I stood in front of it, ready to cook the pancake. But as I was about to start, I realized something. It would be much better with butter. Since there was no milk, is there any butter?

“Mom, do we have any butter?”

“Butter? I wonder if we have any left.”

Mom started searching the shelves. Butter that’s hard to find like this… is it going to be okay? There are no refrigerators. Just as I was thinking that, she seemed to find it.

“Found it. There’s only a little left, but will this be enough?”

I looked, and there seemed to be about two spoonfuls, so it should be fine.

“That’s plenty.”

I wondered if it had gone bad, but it looked normal and didn’t smell strange, so it was probably fine. With that, I put the butter in the frying pan and set it on the fire. As the butter started to melt, I poured in the batter I’d made. It was a bit too much, so I decided to make two, pouring in only half.

If I remember right, you flip it when bubbles start to form on the surface. I waited, but after a while, no bubbles appeared. Still, it felt like it was probably cooked.

I peeked at the underside, and it was pretty well-browned. I should probably flip it now. Any longer and it’s going to burn.

I grabbed another, larger wooden spatula and tried to flip it. But it wasn’t working. This is actually pretty hard. After struggling with the pancake for a bit, Dad offered to help.

“Are you trying to flip that? Here, Dad will do it.”

“Really? Thanks, Dad.”

I handed Dad the pan and spatula, and he flipped it with a single, easy motion. Wow, he’s a pro!

“Dad, you’re amazing! That was so cool!”

“You think so? That makes me happy.”

Dad was grinning from ear to ear.

“Anyway, this is starting to smell really good.”

“Yeah! Smells delicious, doesn’t it?”

A really nice aroma had been wafting through the air for a bit now. It wasn’t exactly a pancake smell… but it smelled tasty, so that means it’s a success, right?

“It certainly does smell nice. Especially since the batter looked so incredibly unappetizing.”

Mom is a little too blunt. Well, given what it looked like, I can’t blame her. I glanced at the remaining half of the uncooked batter and had to agree.

Is it done? I checked the other side with the spatula, and it seemed to be cooked through.

“Alright! It’s done! Do we have a plate?”

“Use this one.”

“Thanks.”

I slid the pancake onto the plate Mom handed me. Then, I cooked the other one the same way and plated it. It smelled so good. It’s making me hungry.

“We still have a little time before the dinner service, so why don’t we all have this as a snack?”

“Good idea. But I’m worried about leaving the hearth fire this high, so… it’s a bit ill-mannered, but let’s just eat in the kitchen. I’ll go get Marie.”

“We’re having it as a snack?! Awesome!”

I always get hungry while helping with the dinner rush. Looks like I won’t have to suffer from hunger today.

“Leon, let’s cut this into four servings, one for each of us.”

“Okay!”

While Mom went to the living room to get Marie, Dad and I cut the pancakes and divided them onto four plates.

Just as we finished plating, the kitchen door opened, and Marie ran in.

“Is big brother’s food ready?! It smells so good!”

“It is. Want to try some?”

“Yeah! I’ve been waiting!”

I really hope she likes it. My heart was pounding as I handed out forks to everyone.

“Alright, let’s eat. Thank you for the food!”

“Thank you for the food!”

We all said it together, and I nervously took a bite of the pancake. Chomp… Not bad! In terms of taste, it’s definitely not a pancake, but it’s good in its own way! It’s a little chewy, with a texture more like… okonomiyaki, maybe. The tartness of the raspberries is also much less noticeable than when I ate them plain.

It’s hard to say if it’s a ‘success,’ but hey, it’s not bad, so I’ll count it as a win. It might even be the kind of taste that grows on you. Since it wasn’t horribly disgusting, I was eating mine with relief when I noticed how quiet everyone else was. I looked around and saw Mom and Dad, frozen, having taken only one bite. Marie was just silently continuing to eat.

Was it bad…?

“Guys, is it… is it bad?”

I asked, worried. I thought it was pretty good, but maybe it wasn’t to their liking?

Just as I was thinking that, they all shook their heads frantically.

“No, Leon! It’s not that! We were just so surprised by how good it is. The texture is really interesting, too.”

“That’s right. I’m just stunned that… that… turned into something this delicious. I was so sure it was going to be awful.”

“Big brother, this is yummy! I like the texture! Make it again, okay?”

Oh, they were just surprised. Haaa, what a relief. The tension drained from my face.

Still, if this dish surprises them this much, they’d be constantly amazed by Japanese food. I want to make something else for them again.

“I’m just glad you guys like it.”

“It really is delicious. And the ingredients are simple, it seems like you could adapt it easily.”

“Leon, you might have a talent for cooking. If you think of any other dishes, you should try making them.”

“Really?! Thanks!”

I’m sure there’s some parental bias in there, but it still makes me happy. I’ll do my best to make even tastier things. It’s a little complicated since I’m not the one who thought of it, but I’m glad it made everyone happy.

“It’s all gone. Big brother, that was so good!”

“You liked it, Marie? That’s great. I’ll make it for you again.”

“Yeah! Let’s go pick more raspberries again!”

“Sounds good.”

Marie seemed to have genuinely enjoyed it. She was smiling with satisfaction. As Marie and I were laughing together, the evening bell rang.

“It’s that late already? Time to open for the evening.”

“You’re right. Leon, Marie, can you two handle the dining hall?”

“Okay!”

Marie and I only help out for the first hour or so of the dinner service, which is usually the busiest part. Apparently, most people eat dinner at home, so the only customers who come are here for alcohol and snacks, meaning it’s not too hectic.

The dinner menu consists of only two items: ale and the snack-of-the-day set. Everyone orders those two things, so serving customers is apparently very easy. Just as I was thinking that, our first customer came in.

“Welcome. Please, have a seat anywhere you like.”

“I’ll have an ale and the snack set.”

“Right away.”

Most of the customers are regulars, just like this one, and they already know the menu, so there’s no need to explain anything. After that, a few more customers trickled in, and after five people had arrived, the flow stopped.

“Leon, Marie, you two can be done for now.”

Mom called us over. Our work was finished. When Marie and I went to the kitchen, Mom handed us our dinner. All that’s left is to eat, wipe ourselves down, and go to bed. Mom and Dad will eat and sleep after the customers leave.

“Marie, let’s go eat dinner.”

“Okay! I’m starving!”

Chatting like that, we went to the living room, sat in our usual spots, and started eating.

“Thank you for the food!”

Tonight’s dinner is bread and a soup full of vegetables. It seems light dinners are the norm in this world. They don’t eat much at night; instead, they eat a lot for breakfast and lunch. It seems to be a habit to eat more at times other than night, to have energy for work. Munch… munch… The bread is hard, but it’s pretty good if you dip it in the soup.

“Big brother, that raspberry dish was really yummy.”

“The pancakes, yeah.”

“Pancakes? Is that what it’s called?”

“Yep. I named it.”

I’m going to end up calling them pancakes anyway, even if I give them a different name, so I decided to just ‘officially’ name them pancakes. The taste and texture are completely different from actual pancakes, but once I get my hands on sugar and milk, I can just make them the real deal and say, “THIS is a real pancake.”

“Yeah! I want to eat pancakes again.”

“I’ll make them again. We’ll have to go pick more raspberries, too.”

“Okay! I’ll pick a whole bunch!”

Marie seems incredibly motivated. I’m glad she liked it that much.

After we finished dinner, we both wiped ourselves down and headed straight for the bedroom. Marie must have been tired; she seemed to fall asleep the instant she got into bed. We only have one bedroom, so the whole family sleeps together, which is a bit cramped, but as I looked at Marie’s sleeping face, I thought it was kind of nice, too.

I must have been tired as well, because I fell asleep almost immediately.

Chapter 2 Part 2

And so, we entered the forest and searched for raspberries, dividing ourselves into teams. However, when we said we were entering the forest, we only went as far as the outer edge of the forest and did not go any further, as it could be dangerous if we got lost.

If we went a little further, there would be a river flowing, but it was decided that we would not go there until we were older.

“I found raspberries!”

Marie shouted. I hurried over to where Marie was and saw many raspberries growing. Nikola and Luke also came running, their eyes shining. Nikola looked mature but seemed like a child and was cute in these situations.

“Let’s pick them. Marie, I brought a hemp bag, so let’s put them in here.”

“Okay! Thank you, Big Brother. I’m glad there are so many.”

“Yeah, let’s do our best to pick them and give some to Mother and Father, too.”

“Okay!”

Marie is working hard to pick the raspberries with her small hands. I also started picking with her. It seems like Nikola and Luke have also started doing the same on the opposite side. There are quite a lot of raspberries, so it is tough.

But in Leon’s memories of this world, there are basically no sweets, and the only memory of eating fruits is from picking them in the forest, so these raspberries are quite valuable. Let’s do our best to pick them.

After that, we silently picked raspberries and filled the hemp bag with them.

“Let’s call it a day, shall we? The bag is already full.”

“Yeah! It’s full!”

“We’ve picked quite a bit over here too, so it should be enough.”

“I picked a lot!”

Everyone is sparkling with delight at the amount of raspberries they have harvested.

“Shall we take a break and have some?”

“Yay~! Let’s eat!”

“Then, let’s all sit on that rock over there.”

“Okay!”

We all sat on a rock that was just high enough to sit on and decided to eat the raspberries. The color is rich and looks delicious, but what about the taste? Crunch… It’s sour!! What is this!? It’s incredibly sour! There’s definitely some sweetness too, but the overpowering sourness is so strong that I can hardly taste the sweetness.

Can everyone else eat this? I wondered and looked at Marie next to me. She was eating the raspberries with a smile and seemed to enjoy them.

“Marie? Isn’t it sour?”

“Why? It’s sweet and delicious!”

“Really? How about Nikola and Luke?”

“It’s sweet and delicious!”

“It’s so delicious! Raspberries are the best!”

Everyone seems to be enjoying it. Why? When I think of raspberries, I think of something sweeter and juicier…

Oh, right. Maybe because I have eaten a lot of sweet things in Japan, so it tastes sour to me. Come to think of it, even though my body is supposed to be Leon’s, my sense of taste has not changed from when I was Ryosuke Ichigaya. The soup tasted bland, too…

If I had been born and raised with only forest fruits as my only source of sweetness, maybe this would be my definition of something sweet. But while everyone else might be content with this, I already know of so many sweet and delicious things. I want to eat sweet fruits, cakes, cookies, and chocolate… just thinking about it makes me crave them.

If I have sugar, I could easily make some simple sweets. Finding sugar is urgent now. While I was thinking about that, stopping myself from eating after only one bite of the raspberries, everyone finished their break and stood up.

“We haven’t been here for that long today, so let’s pick up some firewood and go home.”

“Yeah. I’ll pick up the most!”

“I’ll be the one who picks up the most!”

The three of them had that kind of conversation and started picking up firewood. Although it was just picking up fallen branches on the ground, carrying them home was quite a heavy and laborious task.

The reason why we pick up firewood and bring it home is so that we can get pocket money for it. Since we run a restaurant, we consume a lot of firewood. We usually buy it, but it costs a lot of money, so we go to the forest to pick up branches and use them as firewood to save some money.

Many other families seem to do the same thing, picking up branches from the forest to save money. Nikola and Luke’s family probably does it, too.

“Big Brother, pick some up quickly!”

“Sorry, sorry, I’ll do it now.”

I started picking up firewood too, but the basket on my back was getting heavier, and it was difficult to crouch down. But since Marie and Luke were doing it without complaining, I, as the oldest, could not complain.

Children in this world are strong. My body is still that of Leon’s, so I should be able to do it like everyone else, but it isn’t easy. The children in this world must have strong hearts. I continued picking up firewood, thinking I had to do my best.

“It’s getting late, so let’s go back.”

Nikola said that, and we started getting ready to go back. There are no clocks in this world, so we do not know the exact time, but apparently, we can tell the approximate time by the sun’s position.

“Alright, is everyone fine?”

“Yeah, I’m fine!”

“I can still walk!”

“Yeah, me too. Let’s go back.”

After that, we silently walked back home together. And then, taking a little more time than it took us to get there, we finally arrived at our houses.

“We’re home!”

We first visited Nikola and Luke’s house because Marie wanted to see Uncle.

“Welcome back.”

“Marie said she wants to meet Uncle.”

I said it with a wry smile.

“Is Uncle here? I miss him!”

Marie fidgeted as she could not wait.

“Just wait a moment, I’ll call him now.”

Auntie stood up from her chair, opened the door, and called out to the back of the shop.

“Ben~! Marie-chan and Leon are here.”

As Auntie called out, the sound of footsteps could be heard from the back of the shop, and a well-built uncle appeared. He is still young though, despite being called an uncle. People get married early in this world, so even parents of children our age are in their twenties.

“So, Marie is here! You’re always so cute!”

said Uncle, lifting Marie easily. Marie laughed happily. It seems that Marie was happy to be lifted high. Indeed, our father is not tall or well-built. Come on, Father. You can do it! I secretly cheered him on.

“Leon is here, too! Good, you’re growing up nicely.”

Uncle approached me with Marie in his arms and messed with my hair.

“Whoa~, Uncle! You’re messing up my hair!”

“Don’t worry about it You’re a boy, you know?”

I did not understand what he meant by that. But maybe this kind of carefree attitude is what people like about him. He smiled and looked at us kindly.

I felt like I understood why Marie liked Uncle. Perhaps she had a good eye for people. But I could not relax because of it. I have to be cautious of any man who comes near Marie! With renewed determination, I pumped myself up to protect Marie, but she had already been put down and was ready to leave.

Wow, that was fast! Marie, don’t leave your big brother behind. With that thought, I hurried to catch up with Marie.

“Bye, Auntie and Uncle. See you again. Bye, Nikola and Luke.”

“Okay, see you again soon.”

“Marie, wait a second! Don’t leave your Big Brother behind!”

Saying this, Marie stopped in front of the door and stared at me.

“Because Big Brother has been absent-minded lately. You don’t listen even when I talk to you.”

said Marie, looking straight at me. O-Oh no, did she notice that I have been lost in thought? But she should not have realized that I am not Leon, right…?

“That’s not true! I’m listening properly. I just tend to space out a lot! I’ll be more careful from now on.”

As I hastily made excuses, Marie looked at my face suspiciously for a while before speaking.

“If that’s the case, it’s fine. But listen properly to me next time, okay?”

“Yeah, I’ll listen properly. Sorry about that.”

“Well, it’s okay. Let’s go home, then.”

“Yeah.”

Marie seemed satisfied, so she opened the door and went inside. I breathed a sigh of relief as I watched her go in. I need to be more careful from now on.

Chapter 2 Part 1

Chapter 2 – The Forest of Another World

After having lunch and chatting idly for a while, Father and Mother stood up now that their stomachs were settled.

“Well, Marie and Leon can go play while your mother and I prepare for the evening shift.”

“That’s right. Be careful, you two.”

As soon as they said that, Marie suddenly stood up from her chair as if she remembered something.

“I forgot! Big Brother, you promised to go to the forest with Big Brother Nikola and Luke today!”

“Really?”

“Yes! Did you forget, Big Brother?”

“N-No, I remembered. We need to get ready quickly!”

I answered Marie, feeling a bit flustered inside. Indeed, I found a memory in Leon’s mind of making that promise.

It is inconvenient that I must actively search for memories like this one. But it is better than having no memories at all, so I am grateful for what I have.

According to Leon’s memories, Nikola and Luke are children from the tool shop next door. They are childhood friends who play together frequently. Nikola is the same age as me, and Luke is the same age as Marie, which explains why we get along so well.

“You two are going to the forest today? Don’t forget to bring the beast-repelling bell.”

“Right. We won’t forget. We’ll pick lots of fruits!”

The beast-repelling bell is apparently something you would always bring when going to the forest. It is like a bear bell in Japan. According to Leon’s memories, there are no monsters in the forest, only small animals and bears. Moreover, dangerous beasts like bears live in the deepest part of the forest, so they hardly ever encounter them in the shallower parts. If we wore the bell, we would not encounter any beasts.

In another world, it is typical for there to be monsters, but I wonder if they do not exist in this world. Maybe they only exist in stories. Well, if they do not exist, then that is a good thing. Actually, fighting monsters is impossible and too scary.

“Okay then, let’s get ready, Big Brother!”

Saying that, Marie took my hand and led me up the stairs to the storage room on the second floor. When we go to the forest, we change into leather boots and bring a knife, a leather bag of water, and a basket to carry the harvest. Right now, I am wearing pants made of the same material as my slightly stiff shirt, which is tied with twine, but it seems we will go to the forest in the same clothes.

Alright, I’m ready. It is kind of nerve-wracking to have a knife at my waist. It truly is another world to have even children carry knives. It would be impossible in Japan.

“Marie, are you ready?”

“Yep, I’m ready!”

“Okay, let’s go after we fill up the leather bag.”

We moved to the well and drew water, putting it into the leather bag. The well is the type that you pull up with a rope, not a pump, so it isn’t easy. Alright, we are all set now. We went to the kitchen to say goodbye to our mother and father.

“Mother, Father, we’re going!”

“Take care of yourselves.”

“Make sure to come back before it gets dark.”

“Okay.”

“Yes!”

We replied to our parents and left the house, running to Nikola and Luke’s. Although I said we ran, we arrived quickly because it was just right next door.

The neighboring house is built like ours, with the dining room serving as a tool shop. They sell various tools for daily use, such as knives, leather bags, and hemp bags.

“Hello! Are Nikola and Luke here?”

“Oh, Marie, welcome.”

“Good afternoon, Auntie.”

“Oh, Leon’s here, too. I think Nikola and Luke will be here soon. Just wait a bit.”

It was Nikola and Luke’s mother. Although I called her ‘Auntie’, she is still young and about the same age as my mother. She is a slightly plump and kind person, sitting in a chair behind the counter where she worked as a cashier, smiling at me.

“Is Uncle not here today?”

“Ben went to buy supplies. I’m sorry. He should be back home when you guys return from the forest, so you can see him then.”

“Yay~! I love Uncle!”

“Haha, Ben would be so happy to hear that.”

Ben is Nikola and Luke’s father, a very cheerful and lively person. Marie seemed to love the uncle and often came to see him. By the way, the aunt’s name is Sarah.

“Leon, Marie, sorry to keep you waiting.”

“It’s okay, Nikola. We haven’t been waiting that long.”

Nikola opened the door and came to the shop. With green hair and green eyes, the color was quite unusual from my perspective as a Japanese person, but it is ordinary color in this world. From Leon’s memories, Luke had blue hair and blue eyes, which is also an amazingly normal color. In this world, hair and eye colors seemed to be colorful.

“Luke will be here soon, too.”

“Big Brother Nikola! Let’s pick some fruits today!”

“Marie, that’s a good idea. Let’s pick a lot.”

“Yeah!”

Nikola seemed to treat Marie like his own little sister. He was still gently stroking her head with a gentle expression. Nikola is quite reliable and can be counted on.

“Sorry! Did I keep you waiting? I couldn’t put on my shoes properly.”

“It’s okay, Luke. Did you manage to put them on?”

“It’s perfect now!”

Luke put his hands on his hips and puffed out his chest, looking proud of himself. Although Luke was a bit mischievous, he seemed like a good kid with a kind side.

“Luke, you’re late! We must go quickly, or we won’t have enough time to pick fruits.”

“Sorry, sorry. I’ll help pick Marie’s share, too.”

“Really!? Yay! Thank you, Luke!”

Marie was initially angry, with furrowed brows, but as soon as Luke offered to help pick her share, she smiled wide. According to Leon’s memories, the only sweet thing Leon had ever tasted was forest fruit. It seems that fruits are a precious source of sweetness here.

“Shall we go then? You have the bell to ward off beasts, right?”

“I have it!”

After Nikola’s final check, we set off.

In Leon’s memories, the royal capital was not surrounded by walls. After passing through the densely populated areas, such as the residential areas, there are vast fields and ranches, with houses scattered here and there. I thought that cities are surrounded by walls and such in another world, but it is different here. Are the cities facing the border all like that?

As we walked along the beaten path in front of the houses, we saw fields and ranches in the distance. Then, there was a road that veered to the right, and after walking for about ten minutes, we arrived at the forest.

We walked silently and briskly without chattering and arrived at the forest at a pretty fast pace for children.

“Okay, shall we rest briefly and then look for fruits?”

“I’m still fine, Big Brother Nikola. Let’s find fruit quickly!”

“Get some rest first. We have to walk back home even if we get tired.”

“Okay~”

It would be terrible if we could not walk back home. We had no means of communication, and there were no cars here. As Nikola said, we decided to take a break and sit down. Although it was only a thirty-minute walk to the forest, it was quite tiring for children.

“Big Brother! Can we pick lots of fruits?”

“It’s not really the season yet, so there might not be a lot to pick.”

“What? Geez~”

“Big Brother Nikola, we won’t be able to pick many fruits?”

Marie became teary-eyed upon hearing that there were a few fruits to pick. Marie and Luke do not seem to remember which fruits can be picked at what time. Certainly, Marie and Luke have only been going to the forest since last year or so in Leon’s memories.

“No, there are still some fruits that can be picked at this time of year! Right, Leon?”

Nikola!? Marie looked up at me with tears in her eyes. Let’s see, according to Leon’s memories, what can be harvested at this time of year was…… raspberries! Raspberries exist in this world, too. Come to think of it, when I had lunch earlier, I thought that this world has the same kind of plants as Japan. The steak was made of beef, so I wonder if the animals are similar, too? I do not know the reason, but it is easy to understand for now, and I am grateful.

“Marie, we can pick raspberries at this time of year. Shall we look for them?”

“Really!? I love raspberries. They’re sweet and delicious!”

“We can pick raspberries!? Yay! I love those.”

“Then, shall we go look for raspberries today?”

“Sure!”

Marie nodded with a smile on her face, seemingly to have cheered up. I let out a sigh of relief and gave Nikola a stern look. Nikola, how dare you sacrifice me like that! As I stared at him, his eyes met mine, and he apologized to me with an apologetic look on his face. Seeing him like that, I felt a little pathetic as a 20-year-old mentally and decided to stop blaming Nikola.

Since I became Leon, my actions and thoughts seem to have regressed to that of a child. Maybe some parts of me are being influenced by this young and growing body of mine. Well, for now, since I’m a child, being influenced by my body might be just normal.

“Shall we go look for raspberries, then?”

“Yeah.”

Chapter 1

Chapter 1 – Leon’s Family

So, what should I do now? Mother told me to get some more rest, but I don’t think I can sleep anymore. For the time being, maybe I should explore the house. Memories and seeing it in person are completely different, after all.

First, let’s try to leave this room. With that determination, I was about to get out of bed when I noticed that there were shoes placed next to it. Looks like it is a shoes-on house. When I try to put on the shoes that were placed there, I realize that they are made of some sort of woven grass. It is a bit prickly, but I can endure it for now. There is no way this world only has shoes like this.

So I put on the shoes, got out of bed, and opened the door of the room. There, it was like a hallway, with a dead end on the right side, another room on the opposite side, and a staircase on the left.

First, let’s try opening the other door.

“…Excuse me.”

I said in a small voice as I opened the door gently. I feel like I am secretly peeping into someone else’s house. The room I opened nervously turned out to be a storage room. There are many things placed there. Even if I were to take a look at it now, I do not know what all of this is, so let’s skip it for now.

Thinking that, I closed the door and decided to try going down the stairs next. As I nervously went down the creaking stairs, I quickly reached the lower floor. At the bottom of the stairs is a short straight hallway with one door at the very end, two doors on the right side, and one on the left.

I felt someone’s presence behind the left door, so I tried opening the door on the right side, and it turned out to be the toilet. Anyway, it was smelly and dirty. While thinking that I didn’t want to use it, I decided to forget about it for now and opened the second door.

Behind it was a living room with a desk and a chair. And there was another door at the back of the living room. I found it locked when I approached it, so I unlocked it and opened the door.

Oh, it leads to the outside! There is a small yard and a well beyond that door. It was blocked off from the house next door and the house behind it by wooden fences. There are also wooden fences to prevent people from entering the yard from the road in front of the house. It has a courtyard-like feeling.

There are buckets, washbasins, and other things propped up against the well. A rope runs between the house and the wooden fence, so they probably did laundry here. In Leon’s memories, it seemed like they used buckets and washbasins to wipe their bodies with a cloth. I could not stand the thought of doing that. I wonder if there are no bathtubs in this world. If that were the case, what am I supposed to do…? But there must be a bathtub somewhere. I wanted to believe that it was simply inconceivable for there to be no bathtubs in this world. Once I got used to this world, I would have to go find one.

Next, I decided to open the door on the left earlier. I can hear some noise, so maybe Leon’s mother or his other family members are in there. Meeting them would be nerve-wracking, but I could not avoid it.

I took a deep breath and summoned my courage before opening the door on the left. The room beyond the door is a kitchen, and Leon’s mother and father are cooking inside. When I opened the door, they looked over at me.

“Leon, what’s the matter? You should get some more rest.”

“Mother, I’m fine now.”

As I look at her again, she really is a beautiful mother. She has blonde hair, amber eyes, and is still in her twenties. In Leon’s memories, she is a kind but scary mother when she gets angry.

“Leon, are you okay? I didn’t know what to do when you fell down the stairs and hit your head.”

“Father, I’m sorry for making you worry. I’m completely fine now!”

“I see. I’m really glad.”

Father’s face relaxed as if a huge weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He has brown hair, brown eyes, and gives off a gentle vibe. In fact, he is very kind and family-oriented.

“Jean, if you don’t start moving your hands, we won’t make it in time for the opening.”

“I’m sorry, Loana. I’ll do it right away.”

At Mother’s words, Father hastily resumes his work. It seems like my mother is the dominant one in the family. Watching their interactions, I could not help but chuckle. However, even though Mother is dominant, it’s evident that Father loves her dearly. Despite being scolded, he has a grin on his face.

“Mother, where’s Marie?”

I asked, wanting to meet my younger sister in person. As Ryosuke Ichigaya, I had no younger siblings, so I had always longed for a younger brother or sister.”

“Marie is cleaning the restaurant. If Leon is feeling better, you should go and help, too.”

“Got it.”

“Marie! Leon will come and help you!”

Mother called out to the restaurant. The restaurant and kitchen are connected with a counter in between.

“Yay! It would have been tough doing it alone~~~.”

Marie’s voice could be heard from the restaurant. I returned to the hallway from the kitchen and opened the door at the end. It leads to the restaurant.

As I entered the restaurant, Marie quickly came up to me.

“Big brother, are you okay now? Does your head still hurt?”

“I’m fine now. Sorry for making you worry.”

“Geez, big brother, you’re so clumsy!”

Marie puffed out her cheeks as she said this. I could not help but stare at her. With her brown hair and amber eyes, she is incredibly cute. Too cute. In fact, I need to be careful not to commit a crime. If she were out on the streets, someone might even kidnap her.

Although she is only five years old, Marie is already helping out with the family business and is becoming quite the star of the restaurant. I made a firm vow to protect her from any suspicious characters. It’s like I am acting like a big brother already.

“Big brother, big brother! What are you daydreaming about? Does your head still hurt?”

This isn’t good. I must have looked sick while staring at Marie, which worried her. What a blunder.

“I’m completely fine now! Should we get to work?”

“Really~?”

Marie looked at me with a suspicious expression, but when I vigorously nodded my head, she seemed convinced.

“Alright, then you go clean outside, big brother. I’ll clean the restaurant.”

said Marie, handing me a broom to sweep outside.

“Got it. Then I’ll go clean it up!”

Saying that, I picked up the broom and opened the door that led to the outside of the restaurant.

“Wow~! Mmmph…”

I let out a big exclamation as I stepped outside and quickly covered my mouth with my hand. However, I am still amazed. I knew of this from Leon’s memories, but seeing it with my own eyes is totally different. It is awesome! Completely different from Japan!

The first thing I saw when I opened the door was the main street where carriages could easily pass each other, with many carriages and people coming and going. The houses are mostly made of wood, and there are rows of two-story houses crammed together. However, just looking at this scene, it could also be considered a time slip.

But that was not the case. It was already proven that this is a different world just from knowing that it has magic in Leon’s memories. Even so, I am still feeling excited. The cityscape is not particularly beautiful, and it is less developed and dirtier than Japan, but the excitement of being in a different world made up for it. However… thinking that I had to live here from now on, the excitement faded, and I started wanting to live in a more beautiful place.

But thinking about that now is pointless! I slapped my cheeks with both hands to psych myself up and tried to take a step forward. However, someone walking from my right side collided with me, and I fell on my butt due to the impact.

“Ouch… huh?”

As I endured the pain and looked up to apologize to the person I had bumped into, I was shocked and at a loss for words when I saw who it was.

It was a knight. He wasn’t wearing full plate armor but had simple chest plate armor and a sword at his waist. He is a cool-looking person with red hair and brown eyes.

I did not know if there were nobles in this world, but from his clothes and demeanor, he is definitely an important person. So I panicked and tried to apologize by kneeling, but before I could, the man reached out his hand.

RAC_Vol1_05.jpeg

“Are you okay? I’m sorry for bumping into you.”

said the man. I did not understand what he said for a moment and just stood there looking blankly at him. But then I hurriedly got up and apologized.

“No, I should be the one to apologize. Are you injured, Sir?”

Without thinking, due to my habit from when I was in Japan, I responded politely using honorific language. I wondered if it would seem strange for a child to speak this way. While thinking that, I looked up at the man’s face, and he was frowning.

I guess using honorifics was a mistake. As I panicked, realizing this fact, the man opened his mouth to speak.

“Where did you learn to speak like that? You must be a child of this restaurant. I don’t think you would have had the opportunity to learn it…”

Could it be that using polite language is not allowed, regardless of whether it’s a child or not!? Oh no, what should I do?

“Er… uh… an old man in the neighborhood taught me.”

I stopped using honorific language and tried to make up an excuse, but the man still looked skeptical. As I panicked about what to do when I saw his face, the man’s expression suddenly softened.

“I see. You’re quite something.”

The man said that and patted me on the head. I felt a deep sense of relief at his gesture and let out a sigh without thinking.

“My name is Frederick. What’s your name? And are you hurt?”

“I’m Leon, and I’m totally fine. Sorry for bumping into you earlier.”

I replied as child-like as possible.

“Leon, huh? I don’t have time now, but I’ll stop by the restaurant next time.”

Frederick-san said it with a smile.

“Y-Yes! I’ll be waiting.”

I smiled back, and Frederick-san patted my head again before leaving.

“Phew, I managed to get away with it somehow.”

That was close. I need to be more careful from now on.

Huh? Come to think of it, why was I able to use honorific language? At least Leon would not be able to do it. To begin with, when I think about it, I can completely understand what everyone else is saying as if they were in Japanese, and when I speak, I can speak just as if I were speaking Japanese. Too many incomprehensible things happened, and I was not even conscious of the language, but now that I think about it again, it is strange.

What about writing? With that thought, I crouched down and tried writing words on the ground. To my surprise, I could write the words of this other world’s language as if I was writing in Japanese, and I could read them, too.

What’s going on here…? At least, according to Leon’s memory, he should not have been able to read or write. Hmm, it is certainly strange. None of it makes sense to me.

Anyway, it seems that I can speak, read, and write the language of this world just like it was Japanese. It is convenient, and for now, I’m grateful. But I need to be careful not to get caught.

While I was pondering about this, the door of the house opened, and Marie came out.

“Are you finished, big brother?”

That is when I remembered. I came outside to clean, but I have not even started cleaning yet! So I hurriedly started sweeping the ground with the broom.

“I-It might take a little more time…”

With a dry laugh, I looked at Marie, who was once again looking at me suspiciously.

“Big brother, you were slacking off, weren’t you?”

“I-I wasn’t! I’m almost done, so go back inside, Marie.”

Marie stared at me, but then her expression softened a little, perhaps convinced.

“Well, hurry up then. It’s almost opening time.”

“I know, I know. I’ll be done soon.”

Marie listened to my words and went back inside.

Oh no! I have to clean up quickly! I desperately started cleaning, and after a while, I finally finished. I felt pretty tired because I rushed to get it done. But I felt accomplished when I looked at the clean ground. At that moment, I heard the sound of a large bell. This must be the lunchtime bell. I was impressed by the sound of the bell, but then, the house door opened wide, and Marie came out.

“Are you done, big brother!? It’s already opening time!”

“I-I’m done! It’s clean now.”

“Really? Then don’t just stand there. Come help inside!”

“I-I got it. I was just about to come inside.”

Marie is growing up strong. While thinking that, as I tried to enter the house, I was scolded by Marie again.

“Big brother! Secure the door first!”

“Oh, right, sorry. I forgot.”

While saying so, I desperately search through Leon’s memories. It seems like I just need to open the front door wide and secure it with a stopper. In this world, leaving the door wide open when the shop is open seems common. There are also shops that do not do this, but it seems to be a habit for the lighting of the restaurant and because literacy is not widespread.

Following Leon’s memories, when I opened the door of the restaurant, a customer came right away.

“Is it open yet?”

“Yes! Welcome!”

Marie said with a smile to the customer. The customer looked at her and grinned. Marie is really fulfilling her role as a star of the restaurant. I have to do my best, too! I thought so and went inside.

After that, customers kept coming in one after another. Our restaurant seems to be quite popular. I guide the customers to their seats and take their orders one after another.

Our lunch menu consists of only two sets of items: steak or stir-fried vegetables with pork. The set includes hard bread, soup, and water. Customers can choose steak or stir-fried vegetables with pork as the main dish. It is quite a hearty menu, so there are many male customers, and the steak is ordered more often.

Another new customer came. It was an uncle with a beefy build.

“Welcome! Would you like steak or stir-fried vegetables with pork?”

“I’ll have steak.”

“Yes, one steak, please!”

In this world, polite customer service, like in Japan, is unnecessary. If you work with a smile, you will get high ratings.

“Leon, the steak is ready!”

“Yes!”

My job is to take orders and serve meals in the order of the customers who ordered first when the food is ready, and to clean the tables. Marie is in charge of the sets’ bread, soup, and water, so I just need to serve steak or stir-fried vegetables with pork. The dishes and cutlery are made of wood, so there is no worry about breaking them, but it’s quite a challenge with so many customers.

“Leon, I have three stir-fry and three steaks ready.”

“Yes, I’ll take them.”

And so, as I was busy with my work, the number of customers gradually decreased, and the last customer left. Now the restaurant is closed. The restaurant’s closing time is not fixed, and it will close when customers stop coming. Therefore, the closing time varies depending on the day, but everyone comes to the restaurant when the lunch bell rings, so there does not seem to be much difference.

“Good job, everyone. I’m hungry.”

“Then, shall we have lunch, too?”

“Yay, lunch! I am so hungry.”

Leon’s family seems to have lunch after the lunch rush. I am also hungry, so I cannot wait to eat.

“Leon, you’re going to eat too, right?”

“Yeah! I’m so hungry.”

“We have two steaks left today, so we can split them in half and share them.”

“Really? I’m so happy since we’ve been eating stir-fry so much lately!”

It seems that they always eat the leftover lunch from the lunch rush, which inevitably results in a lot of stir-fried vegetables with pork. Indeed, according to Leon’s memories, Marie has been saying, “I’m so sick of eating stir-fried vegetables with pork.”, recently.

And now she is waiting for the steak with a big smile. Father sees this and says with a wry smile,

“Marie, please wait a little longer since I’m going to grill it now. I’ll make yours a little bigger.”

“Really!? Thank you, Father!”

“Oh my, Marie really loves steak, doesn’t she?”

Even Mother is smiling. Seeing their happy faces, I could not help but smile, too. What a wonderful family. It makes me sad when I think of my own family in Japan, but I am glad to be a part of this family.

“Father, I want a bigger one, too!”

“Leon wants one, too? Then I’ll make it bigger.”

“Both of them are really children.”

Father and Mother exchanged smiles.

“Now, go wait in the living room, both of you.”

“Okay!!”

Marie and I answered in unison and went to the living room.

The living room has a table and four chairs, and Marie sits in front of Mother while I sit in front of Father. With this arrangement, Marie and I are sitting next to each other. We sit in our usual seats and wait for Father and Mother.

“Big brother, I’m looking forward to the steak!”

“Yeah, me too. It’s delicious, isn’t it?”

“Yeah. I love steak! I haven’t eaten it in four days because there haven’t been any left. I was counting the days!”

Saying this, Marie places her hands on her hips and proudly puffs out her chest. Her face is also full of pride.

My younger sister is seriously cute! Too cute! I’m starting to become a doting big brother.

“Good job, Marie. You counted them properly.”

I patted Marie’s head as she smiled happily. My sister is really too cute. All I can think of is how cute she is. She is so cute that my vocabulary is failing me.

As I continued to gush about Marie’s cuteness, our parents entered the living room through the open door.

“Dinner’s ready!”

“Here’s Marie and Leon’s steak.”

“Yay~! Thank you!”

“It looks delicious!”

There is a freshly cooked, very delicious-looking steak there. This is my first meal since coming to this world. I hope it tastes good. I was a little worried since it was a meal from a different world, but it smelled really good that my mouth started watering unconsciously.

“We also have bread, soup, and water. Here you go.”

“Do you two want to have some stir-fry, too?”

“Just steak for me!”

“I think I’ll have a little bit of that.”

“Okay, then, this is Leon’s.”

“Thank you!”

The other dishes also look very delicious. Fortunately, there were no dishes that looked unappetizing. I cannot wait to eat.

“Shall we eat then? Let’s dig in.”

I was quite surprised to hear those words. Is there a similar phrase to “Let’s dig in” in this world? Or is it being translated or something? But I cannot think of any other possibilities.

Hmm, well, there’s no point in worrying about it now. I do not really understand how it works, but it is convenient, so it’s okay. Anyway, let’s eat now!

“Let’s dig in!”

I started eating a little later than Father and Marie.

First up is the steak. It seems that in this world, there is no custom of using a steak knife, and the steak is already cut into bite-sized pieces. So I held a fork, pierced a piece of steak, and put it in my mouth.

“It’s delicious!!”

“Big brother, it’s delicious, isn’t it!?”

It is really delicious. It tastes the same as the steak I had in Japan. Maybe the food in this world is not so different from Japan. But according to Leon’s memories, the repertoire of meals seems to be limited. So maybe the cooking methods have not developed, even though the ingredients are the same. This steak is also delicious, but it is just salty.

Let’s try the bread and soup, too. Munch… It’s hard!? It tastes like very dry French bread. Well, if I chew it well, I can eat it, and it does not taste bad, but it is just hard to swallow.

Now, the soup, gulp… Yeah, it is not bad, but it feels a little unsatisfying because it is just salty. Maybe it is because there is no broth.

How about the stir-fry? Yeah, this is just delicious. It is a taste that I am used to, even in Japan. Well, in Japan, we also used pepper in addition to salt, but unlike the soup, I do not feel satisfied with just salt alone. It seems that the key to the taste was the broth. Other than that, it is surprisingly okay.

Anyway, it is just a normal, delicious meal if I do not have high expectations. This is really good. It does not seem too difficult to find something that suits my taste. I will think about more delicious meals from now on.

As I eat and think about such things, before I knew it, I finished my meal.

“It was delicious. Thank you for the meal.”

“I finished my meal, too. It was delicious!”

When I looked to the side, Marie had also finished eating and was smiling with satisfaction. Father and Mother were looking at her with gentle smiles. I am happy. I will cherish this family in this different world. That is what I thought.

Prologue

“Leon, are you okay!? Father’s here! Can you hear me!?”

“Leon! Are you awake!? Leon, answer me!!”

Ugh~, it is so noisy. And my head hurts so much. The noise is pounding in my head, please be quiet. While thinking that, I managed to open my heavy eyelids, and there were strangers in front of me. Who are they? Where am I? The incomprehensible sight in front of me further confused me, and then a wooden ceiling came into view. My house had a white ceiling. This is not my house, right? Then where am I?

“Leon, are you okay!? Does it hurt anywhere? Can you hear your mother? You fell down the stairs and hit your head. You were unconscious for a while and I was so worried about you…”

As I was confused, an unfamiliar woman spoke to me in a rather agitated manner. Fell down the stairs? And who is Leon? I’m Ryosuke Ichigaya. I do not know anyone with a foreign-sounding name like Leon… Ugh, my head hurts, I cannot think straight. Let’s think about this confusing situation later and go back to sleep. Maybe this is just a dream. If I fall asleep and wake up, I should be back to my normal daily life. Thinking so, I closed my eyes and fell into a deep sleep.

“*Yawn~*, I slept well… wait, where am I!?”

Come to think of it, I had a dream where I woke up in an unfamiliar place… Could it be that it was not a dream!? Why am I in this unfamiliar place? I was supposed to finish my lecture at university and go home. And then I left the university… What happened after that? Eh? I do not remember. Wait, there is a memory of something exploding or something… No, I cannot remember at all. I scratched my head vigorously with my hand, trying to dig up memories.

Then I felt something strange. My hand, why is it so small? Feeling that, I brought my palm to my face, and there was a child’s hand. What is going on!? I frantically checked my entire body. And there it was… a child’s body. Wait, I cannot grasp the current situation at all. It is too incomprehensible. Come to think of it… I was surrounded by strangers in my dream. And they called me Leon. Could it be that I became Leon or something? No, that is too ridiculous…

When I was deep in thought, suddenly, a sharp pain ran through my head, and memories from when I was Leon flooded in. Ugh… what is this? My head feels sick. And what are these memories? Did I really become Leon?

―― For a while after that, I was attacked by intense pain and nausea. Now it has finally settled down. But the current situation is still incomprehensible. According to the memories of Leon that suddenly came to me, this place is not Japan, or even Earth. What is really going on… I am so confused by this situation that it is too unbelievable. Just then, the door to the room I was sleeping in opened.

“Leon, are you awake? Are you okay now?”

This person is… Leon’s mother. I know that from Leon’s memories. She is a beloved mother in Leon’s memories, but for me, she is a stranger. But it is definitely better if nobody finds out that Leon has become Ryosuke Ichigaya. Nobody will believe it, and it would be troublesome if they said something like a demon possessed me…

And so, I have no choice but to pretend to be Leon.

“Good morning, Mother. It doesn’t hurt anywhere, and I’m okay. I fell down the stairs, didn’t I?”

“Yes, you did! You have to be careful. Mother was really worried, you know!?”

“I’m sorry. I’ll be careful from now on.”

“You better be. Anyway, Leon, we already had breakfast, but do you want to eat something?”

Mother peeks into my face with a very worried look and asks. I guess I should not make her worry, but I am not feeling hungry right now because I am just confused. I just want to be alone for a little while to organize my thoughts.

“I’m not hungry yet, so I think I’ll pass. I’ll have lunch, though.”

“Really? Then get some more rest until lunchtime, okay?”

She says that and pats my head before leaving the room.

Whew~, at least it seems like nobody noticed. Anyway, I need to organize my thoughts.

First of all, did I die on Earth? I do not remember anything about that. However, based on Leon’s memories, I know that I am currently in a different world as Leon. It is probably best to assume that it is almost impossible to return to Earth, even though I worked hard to get into the university that I wanted to attend. And I would not be able to see my family or friends again… Thinking about my life on Earth, tears kept flowing from my eyes. I cried quietly for a while, but I realized that it would not do me any good to keep crying. So I decided to accept reality for now.

“It’s sad, but I have to understand the current situation first.”

I slapped my cheeks with both hands to pump myself up.

First, I need to think about Leon’s memories. It is strange, but even though my body is Leon’s, my personality has completely become Ryosuke Ichigaya’s. I can remember Leon’s memories if I try to remember them, but they would not come to mind if I do not try.

According to his memories, Leon had just turned 8 years old recently. I remember celebrating his 8th birthday. The seasons exist, but the temperature difference between summer and winter is not as severe as in Japan. However, it might be harder because there are no heaters or air conditioners.

Also, Leon lives in Lasria, the royal capital of the Kingdom of Lathlasia. His family apparently runs a restaurant there. His father’s name is Jean, his mother’s name is Loana, and his younger sister’s name is Marie. It is a family of four.

Leon’s daily routine is helping out at home when the restaurant is open, and when it is closed, he goes to the nearby forest with the neighborhood children to pick fruits, edible wild plants, firewood, and so on. He also buys snacks with his small allowance.

Leon does not know the exact number of days in a year or the exact time of a day, but there are churches in each region, and people keep track of time by listening to the sound of the bells ringing from there. The bells ring four times a day: morning, noon, evening, and bedtime. The number of times the bell rings in the morning indicates the day of the week, and it goes from one to five for the Day of Fire, Day of Water, Day of Wind, Day of Earth, and Day of Healing. It seems that these five days are repeated, so maybe a week is five days long. I thought the Day of Healing was like Sunday, but according to Leon’s memories, the restaurant does not usually take a day off unless there is a special circumstance, so there might not be a concept of a day off in this world.

As for money, when converted to Japanese yen, iron coins seem to be worth 10 yen, small copper coins are worth 100 yen, and copper coins are worth around 1000 yen. There are probably coins with higher value, but I cannot tell from Leon’s memories.

And this is the most important thing. It seems that there is magic in this world. According to Leon’s memories, almost everyone can use magic fundamentally. Each person can use magic of one attribute, which are fire magic, water magic, wind magic, earth magic, body strengthening magic, and healing magic, making a total of six attributes. It seems that the amount of magic that can be used is determined by the amount of magic power one has.

Around the age of 8, one can receive a magic power measurement and learn about their attributes and how to use magic at the church. Leon recently turned 8, so he is planning to go there soon. I am looking forward to this.

Oh, there is one more important thing. It is the level of development in this world. At least in Leon’s sphere of life, this world is not as developed as modern Earth. There is no running water, so everyone uses well water. Consequently, there is no bathtub or flush toilet. For the bath, water is scooped into a bucket, and one cleans themselves with a cloth. The toilet is more of a pit latrine or pit toilet.

Well, I can tell the level of development by looking at this room. There are no glass windows, only wooden window shutters. The bed has a wooden frame, but it is covered with straw and cloth. Furthermore, there is no electricity. There are candles, so they probably use those at night. The window is open now, so it is bright with natural light, but for me, who was used to living in a building with lights on during the day in Japan, it still feels dim. And then, there is the door that Mother went out of earlier in this room.

I do not think I can endure this without somehow raising the living standards here. For that, I need to gather information. Little is known from combing through Leon’s memories. After all, he is still a child, so he has a lot of vague knowledge, and there are probably many things he does not know. I have to learn them from now on.

For the time being, I should adapt to this world and make sure that no one knows that I have become Ryosuke Ichigaya.
