Chapter 1 Part 1

“First of all, I was called the ‘Hero’.”

“And I was an elf called the ‘Sage’.”

Standing side by side, Reid and Elria announced.

“”We were reincarnated a thousand years later ―― And now, due to various circumstances, we have become engaged.””

Yes, they openly told Wiesel and Millis without concealing anything.

To an outsider, it would sound like a ludicrous statement. However, upon hearing Reid and Elria’s words ――

“”I see. For now, that explains a lot.””

The two accepted it readily. Their reaction was milder than expected, causing Reid and Elria to exchange glances.

“…Wait, is it really okay for you two to accept it so easily?”

“Conversely, why did you think we wouldn’t accept it?”

“I know, right! Reid-san and Elria-sama are clearly out of the ordinary, and we are genuinely relieved that there was a reason behind it.”

“That’s right. Putting aside the process that led to the present, we can say that it is a power you two acquired in the past based on clear and substantiated reasons, rather than being beings with unknown abilities due to sudden mutation. We feel relieved knowing that.”

After hearing the story, the two nodded repeatedly.

“So, what does Reid-san mean by ‘Hero’?”

“If we consider the flow of the story, it can be understood as someone who was closely associated with the ‘Sage’…”

“A thousand years ago, there was a country called ‘Altein’. They constantly fought with Vegalta over land and resources, and in the midst of that, I was the only one who could match the ‘Sage’ ――”

“Reid was called the ‘Hero’.”

Hehe~, Elria proudly puffs out her chest a little. Judging from her demeanor, it appears she was pleased to finally express what she had wanted to say for a long time. However, the responses from the two were still unfavorable.

“Altein… Hero… I’m not familiar with either of those.”

“Well, I can understand the word ‘Hero’ itself… but if you were able to stand up against the ‘Sage’, it wouldn’t be strange for your name to be recorded in history, right?”

“Lady Millis is right. At the very least, battles related to the ‘Sage’ are recorded as historical facts, and even if the country called Altein ceased to exist, its name and anecdotes should have remained, shouldn’t they?”

“We investigated that as well. However, the name Altein doesn’t exist, and the details of the battles we know have either been altered or completely erased from historical records.”

The battles known to Reid and Elria were also recorded in history books. However, while the general outline and trigger of the battles matched, the opposing country had changed from Altein to another nation, or sometimes the battles themselves hadn’t even occurred.

They compared the books held by the Caldwens, the books accessible to the faculty stored within the academy, and the history books available in general circulation, but they all contained the same content.

“At least, according to what I heard from Elria and the headmaster, it seems that among the elves, my name and the existence of the ‘Hero’ have been passed down.”

“Oh, really? What kind of story is it ―― NYUU!?“

“…It’s enough to know that it’s being passed down.”

“I-I… I understand.”

Elria pinched Millis’s cheek and playfully pulled on it. It seems that she is embarrassed to know that their story has become a romantic tale in later generations. However, even in that case, it is only a situation of “being passed down”.

The stories passed down among the elves are not clear historical facts but rather treated as fairy tales or fictional works, and their historical credibility is considered low.

“So now, instead of the history of the entire country, we are narrowing down the scope to the history of technological systems like magic equipment and the process of changes in the ecosystem of magical beasts. We are trying to find clues from the differences in how information is transmitted in each field.”

“…I see. If it’s that kind of story, then I am suitable for the task.”

The Blanche family, Wiesel’s ancestral birthplace, not only has a long history as magic equipment engineers but also has a history of presenting magic equipment to the royal family. Through that process, they obtained information that ordinary people would not know and potentially passed it down to future generations in some form.

Upon hearing that, Millis timidly raised her hand.

“Err… I guess I’m sort of like a representative of ordinary people around here. Is there anything I can do to be of help…?”

“Well, sometimes we need opinions from an ordinary perspective. And, you know, in my time, Noaberg, the place where you lived with the sheep, was part of the Altein territory.”

“Ehhh!? Does that mean it used to be prosperous instead of being a rural countryside?”

“No, even in my time, it was just mountains, and it was considered a secluded place where only a few nomads would visit.”

“I see… So, in other words, it was my destiny to become an elite countryman since a thousand years ago…”

Upon learning that fact, Millis looked sadly into the distance. She was probably picturing the scenes of her ancestors playing with sheep.

“But I think it’s fine to be in a secluded place like that.”

“Elria-sama, it breaks my heart for Noaberg to be treated as a secluded place, let alone a rural countryside…”

“No, that’s not what I meant. I’m saying that if it’s that kind of place, there might be a possibility of information being preserved through oral tradition, as well as through forms like poetry and dance, similar to the elves.”

said Elria as she gently patted Millis to calm her down.

If the elves had passed down the stories through oral tradition, there might be individuals among certain ethnic groups who have inherited them to some extent. Just like Lyatt, who served as Reid’s flag-bearer a thousand years ago and then passed down the notes through his descendant, Alma, there might be some kind of clue left behind.

While the possibility may be slim, considering that a third party intentionally erased information, it is necessary to explore all possibilities in order to uncover those gaps.

“Not only does gathering information require manpower, but analyzing the collected information also necessitates it. That’s why I thought of informing the two of you, whom we can trust, about our situation and seeking your cooperation.”

“…I’m glad that we were evaluated as trustworthy, but it’s true that there are contents that can only be shared with people who can be trusted.”

“Well, it’s hard to believe that people from a thousand years ago have been reincarnated…”

“That’s not all. If someone is deliberately tampering with history, there’s a possibility that they might harm those who become aware of this fact.”

In fact, the opponent has shown movements similar to that.

The appearance of the magical beast known as the ‘Armament Dragon’ during the academy’s examination. There are many inexplicable aspects related to them, and the culprits have yet to be identified.

Not only that, in the present era, ‘Armament Dragons’ are extinct magical beasts. And yet, they have appeared, transcending time, just like Reid and Elria.

“…Well, we were hesitant on whether or not to tell you two because of that, too. Undoubtedly, involving you two in our circumstances will be inevitable.”

Even though they have become friends, the two of them have absolutely no connection to the circumstances of Reid and Elria. They do not want to expose them to any danger. Still, they decided to confide in them because ――

“”We realized that as long as we can protect ourselves, it won’t be a problem.””

“Such reassuring words…!!”

“…Indeed, as long as the two of you are together, safety is practically guaranteed.”

If it is Reid and Elria, who possess exceptional power even in the present era, they can surely protect the two of them from any threats that may come their way. And that was not because they were overconfident in their own abilities, but rather a judgment based on their own strength and the experiences they have built in the past.

“We have Alma with us, and she knows the situation too, so it should be fine.”

“Oh, so that’s why Reid-san and Alma-sensei seemed to get along?”

“Yeah. Alma’s ancestor was actually my subordinate and served as my flag-bearer.”

“I see! That’s reassuring!”

While saying that, Millis patted Elria’s shoulder with a smile on her face. However, Elria, the person in question, tilted her head in confusion.

“That’s why I apologize for involving you two, but please help us.”

“Don’t worry about me. I’ve been interested in Reid’s abilities since we first met, and it will be a good inspiration for developing new magic equipment.”

“It’s a request from one of my few friends, so please leave it to me to help and liven things up!”

“Thank you…”

Elria smiled as she looked at the two, who readily accepted.

And just when the conversation with the two was settled, the classroom door swung open.

“*Yawn~*… Alright, let’s start the class today.”

Alma entered the classroom with a big yawn. However… following Alma, another woman entered the classroom.

It was a woman with beautiful brown hair tied up at the back. And there was a sense of familiarity in her appearance.

“That is… if I remember correctly, she was the person who oversaw our entrance examination, right?”

“Yeah. I remember she taught us many things.”

And as the two took their place at the podium, Alma lightly clapped her hands.

“Attention, everyone! The new teacher who just arrived is going to give us an interesting greeting.”

“E-Eh? An interesting greeting, you say… Like producing a dove from my hand or something…!?”

“Don’t be serious at strange times.”

When Alma gave her a light chop on the head, the woman let out a small “ow” and whimpered.

Seeing the bewildered students, Alma cleared her throat.

“As everyone knows, there was an incident where a third party intervened during the recent examination and released magical beasts to attack the students. As a result, additional teachers will be assigned to each class.”

“I am Philia Theresia, a 1st class mage. Nice to meet you all.”

The woman introduced herself as Philia and bowed her head slightly. Alma then continued her explanation.

“I will continue as your homeroom teacher, but as a special rank mage, there may be times when I need to act for situation assessment and give instructions in case something happens. And so, with Philia as my assistant, she will take charge of the class when I’m away.”

“I’m sorry, but I am no match for Alma-chan ―― OW!?“

“You’re also a 1st class mage, so pull yourself together. And stop calling me Alma-chan.”

“I still have the habits from my student days… Sorry, Alma-chan ―― OWW!?“

Whenever Philia hurriedly spoke, Alma would lightly chop her on the head. From their interaction, it seemed like the two knew each other well.

“Well then, Philia, I have to go meet the headmaster, so I’ll leave the rest to you.”

“Y-Yes… I’ll do it as you taught me yesterday, Alma-chan!”

“Yeah, yeah. And stop calling me Alma-chan.”

As Alma gave Philia a flick on the way out, she gestured for Reid and Elria to come with her.

“Reid, Elria, the headmaster has summoned both of you, so come with me.”

“Understood. Let’s go and hear what she has to say.”

“Reid… What should we have for dinner tonight?”

“Me? I feel like having some meat.”

“Mm, then I’ll go for fish. We will split it evenly.”

“You two are getting too used to being summoned…”

While Alma expressed her exasperation, Reid and Elria left the classroom.

Chapter 1 Part 1

Chapter 1 – The Cursed Child

It all started thirteen years ago. In a small country at the center of the continent ―― the Kingdom of Jade, the curtain of that story was about to rise.

“Haa… Haa… Haa…”

A woman lay on the bed, exhaling weak breaths. She appeared to be in her early twenties, with sunken cheeks and her whole body drenched in sweat. It was evident that she was afflicted by some kind of illness. Moreover, the illness had progressed significantly, and it was clear to anyone that her remaining time was short.

“Sasha…”

A man crouched by the bedside, his back hunched over as he called out, his expression contorted in grief. However, there was no response. It was doubtful if the voice of the man calling out to the woman named Sasha reached her ears.

The two were husband and wife, but they were not just an ordinary couple. They were both heroes, saviors who had saved the people from a great calamity.

A year ago, a calamity known as the ‘Poison Queen’ appeared in the Kingdom of Jade. The northern part of the Kingdom was ravaged by a monster classified as ‘Demon King-Class’. Countless villages were destroyed, causing immeasurable damage.

The woman lying in bed and the man watching over her were the ones who defeated the calamitous monster. The woman ―― Sasha Halsberg, was a formidable mage bearing the title of ‘Sage’. The man ―― Kevin Halsberg, was a master of martial arts known as the ‘Holy Fist’.

With the husband and wife at the center of the extermination squad, they managed to defeat the ‘Queen’, and the Kingdom regained its peace. However… in exchange for that, Sasha fell under the curse that was the ultimate fate of the ‘Queen’ and was afflicted by an incurable disease.

Sasha was currently on the verge of death. Many doctors, pharmacists, priests, and court mages were gathered to save the life of the hero who saved the country, but no means of salvation had been found.

“Haa… Haa…”

“Sasha, why must this happen…? Why do you have to suffer like this…!? God, what have we done…!?”

Overwhelmed by his own powerlessness, Kevin could only watch his wife, suffering.

Kevin, the ‘Holy Fist’, capable of punching a dragon to death barehanded, was the strongest warrior in the Kingdom. Yet, he could not even save his beloved woman, who was afflicted by the curse.

If only they had ignored the ‘Poison Queen’, and just left her alone. Even the thought of unheroic considerations came to his mind, thoughts that he should have escaped without getting involved, even if it meant the destruction of the Kingdom.

“Sasha… Please, don’t die. Don’t leave me behind…”

“Excuse me, my lord.”

Kevin heard a knocking sound on the door amidst his grief. Without responding, he fell into silence. Then, a male servant who worked in the mansion entered as the door opened from the outside.

The elderly servant glanced sympathetically at the couple, his employers, and spoke to Kevin in a subdued tone.

“My lord, there is someone claiming to be a doctor waiting outside. May I let them in?”

“…………”

Kevin clenched his teeth so tightly that they made a grinding sound. Many doctors had examined his wife’s body before, only to find themselves helpless and give up. Surely, it would be the same this time.

“…Fine. Let them in.”

However, Kevin could not simply dismiss the person who had come to save Sasha. Perhaps it was a doctor sent by the grateful king for their extermination of the ‘Poison Queen’. There were even rumors that they would be appointed as nobles for their subjugation of the ‘Demon King-Class’ entity, so it was not an impossible notion.

Once Kevin granted permission, the servant disappeared down the hallway, and soon, a figure entered the bedroom.

“Hey, Kevin. It’s been a while. Do you remember me?”

“You…!!”

A tall woman entered the room with a casual gesture, wearing a black suit designed for men and a white coat draped like a mantle over it. She was in her early twenties in appearance.

Kevin knew her true identity. She used to be called a comrade, but they had since gone their separate ways.

“Why are you here!? Doctor Faust!”

“Haha! Quite an outburst as a greeting. Good to see you’re doing well.”

Being called by her name in a biting tone, the woman in the white coat ―― Faust, raised her scarlet lips in a crescent shape.

Doctor Faust. Evaluations of her varied greatly depending on the person or country.

Positive evaluations included… developing a miracle drug for an incurable disease, or nearly causing the destruction of a certain country but sealing away a demon in the process, and single-handedly stopping a stampede of monsters.

Those who held Faust in high regard praised her as ‘a noble and magnificent woman, almost like an angel’.

Negative evaluations included… conducting human experiments in the process of drug development, or causing the deaths of hundreds of people, wiping out an entire town as a sacrifice for magic, and creating biological weapons by modifying the bodies of beings called ‘demi-humans’.

Those who harbored animosity towards Faust disdained her as ‘a cruel and fearsome woman, almost like a demon’.

Kevin and Sasha had once considered Faust a comrade, but they could not tolerate her abnormal actions and had already severed ties with her.

And yet… why did Faust suddenly appear before them?

“‘Why’ is such a cold thing to say. I wouldn’t be so heartless as to ignore the crisis of an old friend. I came running when I heard that Sasha had been cursed by the ‘Poison Queen’.”

“How audacious of you…! Have you forgotten what you did to the people of that town five years ago!?”

“Of course, I remember. It’s a researcher’s duty not to forget the humans who became sacrifices for experiments. But more importantly… may I examine your wife immediately?”

“You…!!”

Kevin glared at Faust but, at the same time, he felt a glimmer of hope.

The doctor standing before him is a madwoman, an unmistakable monster who has crossed the boundaries of humanity.

(However… without a doubt, this woman is the greatest doctor and mage. Perhaps Faust might be able to save Sasha…)

Rather, if Faust could not save her, perhaps there truly was no way to save his wife. That thought has crossed Kevin’s mind.

“Kuh…! If you do anything strange to my wife, I won’t show mercy!”

Kevin’s expression twisted in frustration, and reluctantly gave permission for Sasha to be examined.

“Fair enough. Just leave it to me.”

Faust lightly patted Kevin’s shoulder with a wry smile and proceeded to examine Sasha.

“Alright… I’ll undress her.”

“Uuhn…”

As Faust removed Sasha’s clothes, purple bruises were revealed all over her body. The bruises covered her skin like an invasion centered around her heart, and had already reached the bottom of her face.

“Well, well, interesting.”

“…………”

Faust examined Sasha’s entire body. It was so thorough that it would have been unforgivable if not for the medical context, or if Faust were not a woman herself.

“Mm, I’ve grasped the general picture. The curse of the ‘Poison Queen’. This seems to be an infectious curse disease. It’s quite a troublesome curse you’ve been burdened with, but… there is a way to cure it. Barely, that is.”

“You can cure it!?”

Kevin could not help but raise his voice. No matter how renowned the doctors he had consulted or how exceptional the mages he had sought, no one had been able to find a treatment for Sasha. Yet, with just a few minutes of examination, Faust had easily discovered a means to save her.

While calming the approaching Kevin with a soothing gesture, Faust spoke in a slow tone, as if coaxing him.

“I’m sorry for raising your expectations, but… it’s not possible to nullify the curse of the ‘Poison Queen’, a calamity on the level of the ‘Demon King-Class’, without any risks. To overcome it, a substitute sacrifice is necessary.”

“A substitute sacrifice…?”

“Do you know of the ‘Soul Transference Technique’? It’s a secret technique that sacrifices someone’s life to bring back the dead. However, by using said secret technique, we should be able to transfer the curse placed on Sasha to someone else and cure her.”

“…………!”

Kevin held his breath. To save Sasha, someone else would have to bear the curse. Sacrificing another person for the sake of his wife… was incredibly selfish and sacrilegious.

“…I understand. I’ll be the substitute.”

After a moment of silence, Kevin spoke those words. He had made up his mind to sacrifice himself for his wife’s sake, but Faust shook her head.

“Unfortunately, you’re not eligible. The ‘Soul Transference Technique’ can only be used on someone who has close information about the ‘soul’, meaning a blood relative. The curse can only be transferred to parents, siblings, or maybe children.”

“What…!? Then, from the beginning, there’s no way to save her!”

Upon hearing Faust’s explanation, Kevin pounded the wall with his fist in frustration.

“Sasha was an orphan with no one in the world. Her parents were already dead, and she had no siblings. There was no one who could bear the curse…!”

When hope seemed to have appeared, it quickly slipped away, out of reach. Kevin was once again filled with despair. But Faust pushed up her glasses with a wry smile.

“That’s not necessarily true, is it? There is someone who can bear the curse.”

“What…?”

“If it’s a close relative, the curse can be transferred. And that includes… an unborn fetus.”

“What!? N-No way…!?”

Kevin understood what Faust was implying and instinctively turned his gaze toward Sasha.

“Haa… Haa…”

His wife, undressed for the examination… Was there another life dwelling within her body?

“So you’re saying… Sasha is carrying my child…?”

“I can’t guarantee that you’re the father… Well, pardon my rudeness. But there’s no doubt that Sasha is pregnant. I assure you as a doctor.”

“…………!”

Kevin’s expression contorted. He had been prepared to make any sacrifice to save his beloved wife. However, the thought of using his unborn child as the price was something he had not even considered.

“What is this…? Isn’t there a god in this world?”

“I don’t mind either way. I’ll respect your decision. Just keep in mind that if you leave it as it is, both the mother and child will die… That’s all I’ll emphasize.”

“Damn it…”

Kevin closed his eyes, clenched his fists, and eventually made a heart-wrenching decision.

“…Please, save my wife. Transfer the curse to the child.”

“I see. I understand…”

“Please, wait…!”

“Sasha!?”

Kevin had made his decision, but Sasha, lying on the bed on the verge of death, stopped him.

When had she woken up? Without raising her body, she glared at Kevin.

“Don’t be foolish… Don’t sacrifice our own child… I don’t want to survive by sacrificing our child…!”

“But… Sasha! There’s no other way! If you die, the child inside you will die, too. In that case, I’d rather… even if it’s just you…”

“This is my child…! If it means letting this child die alone, I would rather choose to embrace this child and pass through the gates of the underworld…!”

Despite being on the verge of death, Sasha’s eyes held a strong determination.

Even when it seemed like she was about to lose her life, Sasha refused to let go of her child. Her unwavering will was truly a mother’s love.

“Hmm… Are you sure about that?”

However, Faust tilted her head and asked Sasha, who had made up her mind.

“Choosing death without transferring the curse to the child… Is that really the best and final decision?”

“Of course… A parent’s duty is to protect their child. Where can you find a parent who would sacrifice their child as a substitute…!?”

“But… if it comes to that, both you and the children will die, you know? If sacrificing just one person could save everyone else, it doesn’t seem necessary for everyone to die.”

“That’s why…!”

Sasha, frustrated and weakened, was about to shout while lashing out against her own body. But suddenly, she felt a sense of unease in Faust’s words.

“Wait. Did you just say… ‘children’?”

“Yes, that’s right… ‘children’. “

Faust nodded and confirmed Sasha’s question.

“You are carrying twins in your womb. There are two fetuses.”

“Wha…!?”

“What!? Twins!?”

Both husband and wife were stunned by Faust’s statement. If there were two children, the premise itself would change.

“If you transfer the curse to one of the two children, the mother and the other child will be saved. It’s a choice between the three of you dying together or sacrificing one person to save the other two… It’s a simple either-or situation.”

“No way…”

“Now, what will you do? My old friend. I will respect your decision. Whether you choose to accompany both children or sacrifice just one… choose whichever you prefer.”

“…………”

“Whichever you choose, it won’t be a wrong choice. There is no correct answer when it comes to choosing life, you see.”

Faust’s expression as she pressed for a decision was calm. It had a gentle and compassionate look. However… to the Halsberg couple, that calm countenance appeared as the face of the devil, urging them to make a contract.

On that day, the couple would make a crucial decision.

The decision they made, after much anguish, would come to shape the fate of numerous people years later… but none of them, including the couple, could have anticipated that outcome.

Chapter 2 Part 2

◆ ◆

“Shall we get going, then?”

At the exit of the royal capital, Headmaster Diana, Lara, Marise, and I gathered. A carriage was prepared, and it seemed we would head to Shifrea in it.

“A carriage, huh…? It’s been a while since I rode one from my hometown to the royal capital.”

“Kurt could probably go to the neutral city in an instant using teleportation magic.”

said Lara, putting both hands behind her head.

“Lara, even if it’s Kurt, there’s no way he could use teleportation magic. It’s lost magic, a type of magic that the Gods of mythological times used…”

“You are right. I’ve only seen it in fictional stories. I was just kidding.”

“I can use it.”

“”WHAT!?””

Lara and Marise exclaimed, their mouths wide open in surprise.

“T-Then! Why don’t we use it!?”

“But there are various drawbacks to teleportation magic. Besides, we have plenty of time, so there’s no need to use it. It’s unnecessary.”

Even for me, it would require a massive amount of magic power to teleport to a place that takes five days by carriage. However, in an emergency, it would not be out of the question to use it. Besides, it is more enjoyable to leisurely take in the surrounding scenery while riding in a carriage.

We would have plenty of time until the negotiation once we get there. It might be interesting to visit the Adventurer’s Guild there.

“Kurt still uses lost magic as easily as breathing…”

“I see Kurt as a character who appeared out of a book.”

Lara and Marise were dumbfounded.

“…You guys seem to be having fun, but there are also monsters outside the city. So you must not let your guard down.”

said Diana in a serious tone.

“Headmaster… With all due respect, I think most monsters can be dealt with if Kurt is there.”

“If you let your guard down, even Kurt could lose his footing. You never know what kind of monsters are lurking. It won’t hurt to be cautious.”

Yes, Diana is right.

With that said, we left the royal capital.

“Wow, it’s so peaceful.”

From the carriage window, Lara was sticking her face out and frolicking.

“Lara… you shouldn’t stick your face out recklessly. Monsters might attack us from afar.”

“Ehhh, but it’s boring. Kurt and Marise-chan, too… Look!”

said Lara, pulling Marise’s and my arms.

Due to the narrow window, the three of us were tightly pressed against each other. As a result, soft parts, such as the chests and stomachs of the two, were pressed against my body.

“It’s certainly a beautiful view.”

As Lara said, a tranquil plain scenery spreads outside.

“I know, right!”

“Occasionally, it’s good to travel by carriage. When I was traveling alone from my hometown to the royal capital, it was boring then.”

Traveling by carriage seemed to be the right choice after all.

“Marise-chan, get your face closer over here!”

“Wait, Lara. Please don’t pull me so forcefully! I’m getting too close to Kurt, and it’s becoming rather embarrassing! Well, I can’t say I dislike it, but…”

Their bodies were getting closer to me.

“Kukuku… Kurt, you seem to be quite popular.”

Diana chuckled, watching the scene from behind.

── And so, three days have passed.

“Hm…? I sense a monster’s presence in the distance.”

I always kept a wide-range detection magic in case of emergencies. Finally, it seemed like something big had come up.

“A monster? Kurt, you said it like it’s a big deal. Is it strong?”

“Not really.”

We had encountered weak monsters such as wolves and slimes on the way here, but this time it was a rare monster.

It was still not enough for me, though.

“How far away is it?”

Marise sounded tense as she asked.

“It’s about 15 kilometers ahead. If we keep going at this speed, we’ll run into it in about an hour.”

“15 kilometers, you say!? How is that possible!?”

“I taught you and Lara the detection magic, didn’t I? You should be able to do this much.”

“But we can only detect up to a radius of 5 meters from ourselves!”

Marise retorted.

“Should we tell the coachman to change the route?”

Lara asked with a worried expression, trying to stand up.

“There’s no need to go through the trouble for such a weak monster. Changing the route would only be a waste of time. Besides, I’m getting bored, and my thirst for battle is calling.”

“Heehhh, if Kurt says so, I guess it’s okay…”

“It’s a weak monster, huh…? I have a bad feeling about this.”

It was decided. The carriage continued on its planned route, and about an hour later…

“Wait, isn’t that a Hydra!?”

Marise exclaimed as she got off the carriage and looked up at the nine-headed serpent.

“That’s right, a Hydra.”

“Isn’t it a <<Disaster-Class>> monster!? Kurt, your ‘weak’ statement is not reliable! If you knew it was a Hydra, you should have said so!”

I was scolded by Marise.

All of us got out of the carriage.

“Headmaster, you can wait inside the carriage.”

“I finally have the chance to see Kurt in action. There’s no way I’m going to miss that, right?”

Diana seemed excited, her voice full of energy.

Well, do as you like, then.

“Shaaaaaah!”

“Wow, we’ve been spotted!”

Hydra’s voice made Lara flustered.

“Fire Spear!”

Marise stood in front of Lara and immediately cast her magic.

The Fire Spear hit one of Hydra’s nine heads, causing black smoke to rise.

However ──

“It didn’t work!?”

Marise exclaimed in frustration as she witnessed the head, which had been struck by the magic, regenerate before her eyes.

Even if one of Hydra’s heads were destroyed, it would infinitely regenerate as long as the other heads remained. Therefore, to defeat Hydra, it was necessary to destroy all nine heads simultaneously.

“Both of you, stay back.”

I stepped forward in front of the two and focused on Hydra.

Let’s see… That magic should do the trick. It was about time I started feeling drowsy from being rocked in the carriage. This will be a good way to wake myself up.

“Kurt!”

Just as Hydra was about to stretch out its neck and attack, Lara called out my name.

“Oh? You’re not afraid of me. You have quite the courage.”

I was impressed as I quickly assembled and activated the magic formula immediately.

The name of that magic was ── Meteor Bomb. It is a fire attribute magic that triggers multiple explosions, causing huge damage to the opponent.

Explosions centered on Hydra, spreading out in a chain reaction.

“Shaaaaaaaaah!”

Hydra’s last moments echoed around us.

Eventually, after the explosions subsided, only Hydra’s burnt body remained.

“That’s about it.”

I brushed off my hands.

“A <<Disaster-Class>> monster can be defeated in an instant…? As expected, Kurt is truly amazing.”

Diana gazed at the Hydra’s corpse intently.

“I can’t believe Hydra could be defeated so easily.”

“Lara, please don’t misunderstand. It’s only because Kurt can do it. He’s the only one who says that a <<Disaster-Class>> monster is weak.”

Lara poked the burnt Hydra’s body, and Marise watched from behind.

“Kurt… What was the magic you used just now?”

“It’s called Meteor Bomb. I used it because it looks flashy, but not practical. You have to set up a barrier around yourself so that you don’t get caught up in it…”

“To claim that the magic capable of defeating Hydra in a single strike is not practical… You truly are an incredible person…”

Marise sighed and said in a slightly admiring tone.

Chapter 1 Part 6

6

The graduation ceremony at Filnots Military Academy proceeded smoothly. We graduated from the academy in a solemn atmosphere without any major issues. Holding a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a graduation certificate in the other, we gathered in front of the familiar academy building, facing each other.

“It’s finally over…”

“Yeah~!”

After discussing our plans to meet up later, we decided to disperse.

“Within three days! If you don’t contact us even after the deadline, I’ll come barging into the inn where you’re staying!”

“I got it. I’ll definitely get in touch.”

I replied briefly to Petra, and we all turned our backs to each other.

“Well then, see you on another day.”

“I’ll be waiting for your message.”

“I’m looking forward to our next gathering~! See you~!”

Steano, Petra, Ambros, and Mia, graduates of the military academy, each set off on their respective journeys home.

“Well then, Al-senpai. We’ll be going, too.”

“…Um, congratulations on your graduation. Please continue to… um, do your best.”

“Yeah.”

The current students, Addy and Tredia, who still had cleanup tasks after the graduation ceremony, returned to the venue. Watching the graduates gradually leave the academy, I sighed deeply.

―― Well then, let’s go.

Today’s main event is not the graduation ceremony, but the turmoil caused by the annulment of the engagement of Princess Valtrune.

In the past, I had witnessed a similar scene where Princess Valtrune and Prince Yuri broke off their engagement. And after the prince left, I remember calling out to her. That was probably the first time where she and I had a proper conversation. And this time, I am intentionally heading toward that incident.

In this current life, I have decided to side with the Vulcan Empire. So, at the moment when the Kingdom and the Empire part ways, I plan to meet Princess Valtrune and pledge my loyalty to her. It feels like I will be taking advantage of her broken heart, and I feel sorry for that. However, in my previous life, I regretted refusing her invitation. That is why this time, I want to be on her side.

After waiting for a while, I could hear the footsteps of two people treading on the ground. As expected, they stopped a short distance away from where I was hiding.

“Valtrune. I hereby annul our engagement, effective immediately!”

An unsettling atmosphere permeated the backyard of the military academy.

In a place where no one would stop by, a major incident that would greatly shake the relationship between the two countries was quietly unfolding. Hidden in the nearby bushes, I silently watched the scene.

After this, Princess Valtrune and Prince Yuri would engage in a fierce exchange of words, escalating into a big fight. Will the intense chaos, with insults flying back and forth, begin now…? While thinking such things, I patiently observed the outcome, but ――

“I see… I understand. Let’s annul the engagement, then.”

She accepted his words without showing any signs of anger, calmly responding in a composed manner. Her icy blue eyes became visible every time her pure white hair swayed in the wind.

―― The development… has changed?

I was quite shaken inside because the flow of the annulment seemed different from what I had seen before.

―― What does this mean? It was not supposed to proceed so quietly.

The prince also seemed taken aback by her calm demeanor.

“Hey, you… Do you even understand what I’m saying? It’s the annulment of our engagement, you know? I won’t let you say you don’t know what that means.”

“I am aware. What would you like me to do about it?”

“What ―― !”

The prince’s face flushed red, his anger bubbling up. On the other hand, Princess Valtrune stared at him with a completely cold gaze.

Normally, both of them would have started arguing without composure… That was how it was supposed to be. It was not supposed to be a situation where only Prince Yuri was swayed by emotions.

At the end of a big fight, there was also a scene where Princess Valtrune was slapped across the cheek… No, wait.

―― She was slapped across the cheek!

I completely forgot about it. It was a well-known story within Filnots Military Academy that Prince Yuri behaved arrogantly. And I had witnessed that scene in my previous life. On that day, I lacked the courage to step forward, so I could only watch his arrogant behavior from the shadows. It was because, subconsciously, I was afraid of authority.

The image of her left behind, collapsed on the ground with swollen eyes, vividly flashed through my mind. While thinking I should stop it, there is a part of me that wonders if leaving here would be a bad move. Should I take action or not? If I do not act, it will be the same as my previous life.

“To help her…? Or to not help her?”

As I remained indecisive, the conversation over there continued to progress rapidly. I should make a choice before it reaches a point of no return. Yet, I find it difficult to move.

“It seems you won’t understand your position until you experience some pain!”

In a vile tone, Prince Yuri menacingly berated Princess Valtrune. However, she remained completely unfazed.

“You must be joking. We should be in equal positions.”

“You…! How dare you!”

―― There’s no time to think!

‘I need to rush out and save her right now.’

I made up my mind and was about to step out of the bushes. I stepped on a twig, feeling my heartbeat increase slightly, but I pushed forward without paying attention to it. However, I suddenly felt a faint sense of unease, as if something had passed right in front of me, and I stopped moving just before fully exposing myself.

…It was just a moment, only a brief moment.

It started when I sent a glance to Princess Valtrune and Prince Yuri. In the instant he raised his hand ―― I could see the slight relaxation of her mouth. Even from my distant viewpoint, it was clear that the corners of her mouth were raised.

“―――― !”

―― Why did she… smile just now?

Furthermore, it seemed like her gaze was directed not toward the prince but towards me… It felt as if she could see me, as if she had noticed my presence, which was strange. A cold sensation ran down my spine. It could not be possible. However, she addressed Prince Yuri in a cold voice.

“Hehe, is that so? Acting so rough in the presence of outsiders.”

“―――― !”

Princess Valtrune halted Prince Yuri’s movement with a single sentence. At the same time, with that single sentence, I understood everything. She knew that I was hiding and observing this situation.

“What is the meaning of this!?”

“It means exactly what it sounds like. Do you want to stop with your nonsense? Or…”

“Damn it!”

The prince’s face turned blue upon her words, looking around nervously without lowering his hand. But in the end, it seemed that Prince Yuri did not notice my presence. That is natural since I am perfectly hidden. For an ordinary person, it would be nearly impossible to spot me.

“Hmph, just bluffing, aren’t you? Are you really that afraid of being hit?”

Princess Valtrune responded to his defiant words with a mocking laugh.

“If you think so, then maybe you’re right. Please, feel free to do as you like.”

“―― How insolent!”

Her expression remained unchanged. No matter how much the prince made a show of raising his arm or trying to provoke her, she did not make any move to avoid it. Her composed attitude and unwavering composure broke the prince’s resolve.

“I-It can’t be… You’re not bluffing…?”

Then, taking into account the possibility of being observed by someone, he clenched his fist tightly and kicked a stone on the ground with great force. Even as a prince of a country, it seemed that he still cared about appearances and maintained a certain level of rationality.

The prince openly contorted his expression, clearly showing his desire to release his pent-up emotions with nowhere to direct them. His frustration remained unabated. However, any possibility of the situation escalating into further turmoil had completely vanished.

“Damn it! Valtrune…! Don’t think that this will end here. I will make you pay eventually!”

His words of intimidation fell on deaf ears as she elegantly smiled.

“If you can, go ahead and do your best.”

“―― Tch! Remember this!”

Leaving behind a parting shot like a petty villain, Prince Yuri quickly departed the scene.

Why is it so? Princess Valtrune’s actions were quite different from before the regression. Not only did she emerge unscathed from this encounter, but she also easily repelled Prince Yuri.

There is no doubt that the longstanding conflict between the Kingdom and the Empire deepened along the predetermined path. However, it is an undeniable fact that significant changes occurred during that process.

―― Is she truly the Princess Valtrune I know?

Watching her composed behavior, doubts started to arise within me.

“Now… that interloper is gone.”

As Prince Yuri left, silence engulfed the surroundings. Wearing a radiant expression, she casually turned her feet in my direction, as if it were only natural.

“You’re here, aren’t you?”

Stunned, I remained frozen in place as Princess Valtrune slowly walked toward me.

―― So, she has indeed discovered that I was secretly watching her.

“You don’t have to stay hidden anymore. Prince Yuri has left.”

She called out to me in a voice audible only to my ears. Her words indicated that she was aware of my presence. Ultimately, there was no point in hiding.

“…How did you know that I was hiding?”

“Why do you think so?”

“………”

“I’m sorry. I was being mean.”

Princess Valtrune smiled cheerfully.

Indeed, the princess standing before me felt somewhat different from the one I had seen in my previous life.

Prologue

The memories of her mother in her previous life are few. Not that they were ostensibly on bad terms, but her mother was cold toward Elria. They only spoke the bare minimum, and there was no conversation between them that felt like a typical parent-child relationship.

That was why Elria immersed herself in the study of magic. It was a way for little Elria to capture her mother’s attention, thinking that if she could accomplish something amazing, her mother would praise her. That was a pure and innocent desire of a child.

However… this may have been the reason that drove her mother away. Not only did little Elria study and master sorcery like an adult, but she also delved into developing a new technology called ‘Magic’, which must have seemed unusual. And with each passing day, she had fewer chances to converse with her mother.

On the other hand, Elria seemed to have had many conversations with her father.

“Father, I want to read this book.”

It was an academic book related to the sorcery that her father had.

Her father was often away from home, and even when he was at home, he confined himself to his room. Compared to her mother, Elria had far fewer opportunities to meet with him. Despite that, little Elria wanted to know more about her father.

But even so, her father scratched his head in embarrassment and smiled.

“Hmm… even if El reads it, I think it’s probably too difficult to understand, you know?”

“Mm, it’s difficult to understand?”

“Yeah.”

“But I don’t think I should avoid reading it just because I don’t understand.”

“…El really says deep things.”

And so, with a troubled expression on his face, her father read the academic book to Elria.

Elria sat on her father’s lap, and whenever she did not understand a word or meaning, he carefully explained it in a way that even a child could understand.

Then, it became a daily routine for her to sneak into her father’s study and read academic books whenever he was not around. She would demonstrate her sorcery skills in front of him when he came back home.

Seeing Elria like this, her father would smile happily.

“El is really such a hard worker.”

He said that as he gently stroked her head.

“Yes, I did my best.”

“Yeah. I never thought you would understand sorcery so quickly.”

said her father while looking up at the towering tree in front of them. It was created by Elria’s sorcery.

She had prepared various catalysts, arranged them to create a synergistic effect, and constructed a formation to ensure that the magic power flowed in the correct order. It was Elria’s masterpiece.

“With this, I challenge Father to ‘Gekokujō’.”

“…Where did you learn that word?”

“It was written in a book.”

“Come to think of it, you said you started reading other books after reading all the academic books…”

“I read them all and memorized them all.”

As little Elria proudly puffed out her chest, her father scratched his head, looking troubled.

“Well, since you’ve challenged me to gekokujō, I have no choice but to accept it…”

“Bring it on!”

“…El learns more words every time we meet.”

As her father patted Elria on the head ―― the exact same towering tree was created next to the one she had made. It broke through the ground, mowing down the surrounding trees, and grew towards the sky.

As Elria looked at the towering tree, her father smiled a little proudly.

“Let’s see. I guess mine is taller.”

“…Father, you’re acting childish for someone who is dealing with a child.”

“Ugh… I don’t know what to say to that!!”

“But how did you do it?”

Despite being a child, Elria had a complete understanding of the basic fundamentals and principles of sorcery. However, what her father just did was a technique that deviated from those theories.

“Father, please tell me how you did it.”

“Hmm… I don’t think I can do that.”

Her father smiled wryly as usual. However, it was the first time he refused to teach her something. That was why Elria pouted.

“Not only is Father immature, but you’re also mean…”

“My evaluation as a father is going to plummet…”

But then her father continued speaking,

“Rather than me teaching El, I think it’s better for you to discover the answer on your own.”

“……On my own?”

“Yeah. It’s easy to just give El the answer, but that would take away the fun of exploring and discovering new things for yourself, wouldn’t it? So from now on, instead of just focusing on sorcery, it might be good to put effort into creating new things.”

He then patted Elria’s head as usual ――

“So that you can create a technique that can fulfill your wish. You can call it ‘Magic’ or whatever you like.”

He spoke to the little Elria with a gentle smile.

Bonus Story

Bonus Story – The Hero and Sage are Receiving Special Training

Eating is an important activity for living creatures. It not only regulates the body’s condition and creates a strong physique to stabilize magic power generation, but also greatly relieves physical fatigue and mental stability.

However, one should never lightly order a ‘secret menu’ just because it sounds interesting. If you do something like that ――

“―― What should we do with this?”

Millis gazed at the food on the table with a slightly pale expression.

“…Lady Millis, are we really going to eat this?”

“Wiesel-chan… we shouldn’t waste food…!!”

“That’s true, but what should we do if the food that was served is not what we expect?”

Wiesel furrowed his brow and adjusted his glasses before looking at the food again.

What is on the table is food that looks red.

It is just red. Everything is red.

The color was so eye-watering that it hurt to look at, and the fragrance was not just tickling, but rather had a stimulating odor that pierced the nasal cavity and reached the eyeballs.

“Oh, it looks really spicy.”

“Mm… I think it probably uses capsaicin fruit.”

“Capsaicin…? Isn’t that the fruit that’s said to make even dragons fall with just one bite!?”

“Is that really something we can eat…!?”

“Before cooking, it’s lethal in just one bite, but after cooking, it becomes edible. It’s actually good for promoting the flow of magic power by sweating out impurities in the body.”

After saying that ―― Elria scooped up the contents of the dish with a spoon. She then chewed it several times.

“Mm… It’s spicy but delicious.”

“It’s like a spicy stew. I could handle it being a little spicier.”

“These two ate it without hesitation…!!”

“They even have the composure to express their thoughts on the taste!!”

“That’s a bit of an exaggeration. You guys would understand if you tried it.”

Reid calmly offered the dish to the two of them.

When the dish was brought closer, Millis and Wiesel both grimaced at the same time, but upon seeing that the two of them were munching away, they must have judged it to be safe.

“W-Well, it’s not like it’s bad for our health, right…?”

“Yeah… spicy foods are also good for recovering from fatigue and promoting overall health.”

And just as the two of them made up their minds and put the spoon in their mouths ――

“”AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!?””

Their screams resonated throughout the dining hall.

“I-It h-hurts…!! Everything hurts just from breathing…!!”

“It feels like we swallowed burning stones that are scorching our esophagus and stomach…!!”

Millis was shedding tears as she stuck out her tongue, while Wiesel was beginning to sweat profusely from his forehead with a pained expression.

Reid and Elria tilted their heads together as they watched the two of them.

“It’s not really that spicy, is it?”

“Yeah. It’s tastier than the stomach of a poisonous dragon or the meat of a one-horn bear.”

“Oh… I remember that one-horn bear meat being so smelly that I couldn’t eat it. I also tried eating the larvae of the royal moth, but the taste was awful, and my tongue was paralyzed for a whole day.”

“I know what you mean. No matter how nutritious it is, I never want to eat them again…”

“You guys have such strange comparisons to make…!!”

“Why did you guys even think about eating those things…!?”

And so, while reminiscing about their bitter past experiences, Reid and Elria finished their meal, feeling grateful for modern food.
